Just got my new camo tarp from DD Hammocks. Been itching to get out and use it. Had a 2 night camp planned this weekend but a good dose of man flu the week before put the kibosh on it but by the end of the week I felt well enough to try an overnighter. So got my kit together and and headed out to the local wood on my own.

Once I got my hammock and tarp set up, it was time to get a fire going to cook my tea. There is plenty of dead wood around so only took a few minutes to get some together and get the fire going. Built a little wood reflector to hide the fire from the road and to keep me a bit warmer.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_kplexf_qDc8/TY-YrrLuvXI/AAAAAAAAAH8/i7L8kw3Ay6o/s640/CIMG0262.JPG

Tea was "Look what we found" chile and it was very good, for pudding I had an army issue ration pack Treacle Sponge, bit too sweet for my liking.

Had a good nights sleep and woke up to bird song and the sound of a woodpecker. Got up and got the fire going again to make breakfast. Whilst waiting for the water to boil for my coffee had some more bits out of the ration pack, oatmeal block with yeast extract spread on it. Not bad at all. Once I had a cup of coffee, I got the packet of sausage, beans and omelette heated up.

After breakfast I got packed up and headed home. Had a nice overnighter and was an interesting experience camping out on my own.

looks good, thanks for sharing.

Gotta love the 'look what we found' meals, so much better than the rat packs or the branded 'camping' meals.

Yes it was. Underblanket and a very good sleeping bag. Very toasty warm :D

I saw their new MC tarp the other day and thought to myself "I gotta get me one of those" lol
Can't beat a comfy hammy and tarp setup for a lightweight pack

Resnikov & Crazysaint's recent trip posts have inspired me to try and go "a bit lighter" on my next trip. Think I'm still packing too much kit.

Another great post Resi,
dont want to hijack your post but have a general question for other hammock users
'does anyone else get sore/numb heels in their hammock' ? :confused2:

Sometimes, and cold lower extremities too, it's cause your feet are too high in the hammock and the blood isn't getting there just as easy as it's used to..its one of the reasons I'm not particularly fond of a hammock, alter your sleeping position and you should be fine..

If there were plenty of trees on the moor I would have gone a lot lighter with the hammock and ditch the tent, Mine cheapo tent weighs in at 2.6kg.
Inspiration for my trip came from that most wonderful of chaps Martin.

If you use a compact hammock your feet get squished together in the night, further reducing blood flow. I'm making a "toe bar" for mine to hold the foot end wider during the night

See I went for the MC (multi cam) 3 x 3. been using a 2.4 x 3 so I'll have more cover than I did, plus can always turn it diagonal for extra length and my hammy is only a compact so quite short compared to some. £32.99 inc VAT so a decent price I thought for a 2011 model

LOL, I'm only 5'10" so a 2.3 hammy just about does it with the draw in at the foot end haha

got my nice new DD MC today, first step was to ditch the nasty black guy lines and move the pegs to my windshield. popped in my paraguys and placcy pegs so ready for the weekend.

@resnikov

Just noticed your crabs are quite far from your hammy, do you notice rain railing/wicking still? It always seemed to me that having the crabs outside of the tarp defeated the object.

The photo dosn't show it well but I have 2 crabs on both side of the hammock. The set up is:
Amsteel Closed loop (through the hammock channel) -- Crab -- Amsteel Whoopie Sling -- Crab -- Tree Huggers.

The crabs nearest the hammock are under the tarp so shoudn't have an issue with the rain wicking, havent experenced hammocking in the rain yet though.

Will try and post some other photos that show the set up better.

Sorry bud, just looked closer. I see how you mean, it's kind of like a quickdraw between the hammock and hugger. Least with amteel it won't wick so much as rail down, which means soon as it hits the crab nearest the hammy, it'll drip there. Thats a nice setup you have there, how much does the whole lot weigh in at? or haven't you had chance to find out?

resnikov

Not sure how much it weighs, will dig out the scales and weigh it. The carabiners aren't the lightest, but cannot justify the cost of lighter ones at the moment.

What hammock is it Resnikov? I'm thinking of getting the DD camping hammock as my 1st hammock coz it's not too expensive if I don't like it. Also does anyone know if the camping hammock can be used on a nice night without a tarp? Will it keep out light rain?

resnikov

Its a DD frontline. Not sure about the camping hammock and light rain, it might but dont think its classed as waterproof.

Only the travel hammock is listed as "bivvi" waterproof, the camping and FL are untreated as far as I know. You may be able to treat it though, it's ripstop fabric I believe so anything that can proof man made fabrics should do the trick.

MikeWilkinson
03-04-2011, 08:45 PM
You need a tarp with all hammocks, unless you use them with a peapod or similar 'sock', the Bivvi is only waterproof on the base layer so it is still partially wicking, besides you don't want to use a waterproof fabric as you will wake up shivering drenched in sweat what ever the weather.

So basically ignore what I said and listen to the expert hanger LOL, I didn't even think about the sweating part

just put my order in with DD for a pair of their DMM crabs, £11 for two, not too bad for climbing grade crabs. plus 5 mini craps for my ridge line, sick of threading and unthreading every time I set up. The Shorea (Meranti) "toe bar" spreader I made works a treat for freeing up foot space and is light. With current screw links, the set up comes in at 1.5 kg inc rope, cord, links, bar, hammock, tarp and pegs. will let you know how much it comes in at when the new crabs arrive.

Oh and the hammy is Tenth Wonder compact camo, tarp is the DD MC 3x3, pegs are plastic tough pegs and ropings are standard Tenth Wonder supplied

sorry, Made a miscalculation on the weight. it was 1.5 kg without the ropes. with the new crabs it is 1.4 without ropes, 1.75 with ropes, the 1.4 includes the mini crabs for the ridge line too.

It's just a length of shorea (1" x 1" x 11"), with a V notch at each end to fit between the ropes at the end of the hammy.

I remember that winning combination well, on EnE we didn't even have the sleeping bag or the poncho, but we did have a nice wet trench. Apparently the NBC suits would keep us warm.....yeah...if you say so...LOL
