I was interested in finding out how many people on the site are from N Devon/Exmoor. And if any of them were interested in having a meet. Maybe the first meet could be just a day walk or something and then we plan something bigger for another time. Also people who could travel to Exmoor are more than welcome as well. Anyway if you're interested write on the link.
Thanks

Time for a local one :D
Jack - you have something in mind?
It looks like that a few of you would be traveling so a one day meet might be less convenient. Anybody have an idea of a suitable overnight stop? Or is it time for a bit of 'stealth crafting'?

I'll defer to the guys with the local knowledge for a stop-over but stealth is fine by me if we need to.

Well I could list a few places that you can park for a couple of days without anyone noticing. Simonsbath comes to mind. It's a small place but it's got a pub a tearoom and a small surplus store. :) But anyway I'll think of a few places and get some piccys for everyone.

There's a great camp site just outside of Dunster which I went to a couple of times about 15 years ago. I can't remember what it's called at the moment, but it's by a small river and allows fires. There is a small toilet and shower block but there it's a really small site. The lady comes round in the morning to collect the cash. I'll try to find what it's called and report back.

Martin Looks nice and I don't get over to the east side of exmoor as much as I'd like to. I'll try and find out the name. I like the place called Homer. :D I think it's supposed to be called horner but it's been misspelt. Either that or it's the typeface.

Poolbridge suits me fine.
Date wise I'm easy however, Some of our Welsh contingent are looking at a woodland meet near the Gower (Swansea area) around 21st May with an open invite to everyone so maybe want to avoid a clash. Nothing's been posted about it yet, probably come out in next day or two.

Yeah I was thinking about dates myself. Basically if people were interested in coming could you say when would be a good time. After all we don't want to leave anyone out, also maybe we should choose a time when it was not too busy. As to avoid peak holiday-maker time. And another thing to find out if if there are any good walks from Poolbridge.

Nice find Martin
Jack - I think Martin has found the ideal place. It would be a struggle to find anywhere else that will allow an open fire to cook the range of foods that seem to turn up on these meets. I can give you a hand in looking into some local walks if you wish. It might be worth giving them a ring to find out whether the hammock contingency are catered for here or whether it is strictly a ground based sleeping setup.

And no angry farmer will chase me away in the middle of the night. :D Yeah I was looking at the OS map and I think there is a couple of good looking circuit walks in the area. Also Dunkery beacon (the highest point on exmoor) is nearby. I'll be happy to guinea pig any of the walks people suggest. (except ones to Australia :)) I'll look at the map again today, if I was planning a walk what sort of mileage would people be expecting to cover. After all I don't want to turn a relaxing hike into a yomp. :D

Have used Pool Bridge camp site many times (even proposed to my wife there on one memorable night) but afraid it has become a victim of it's own success. Has changed from a quiet beautiful site to packed most of the time and little access to areas where fires are allowed. A shame but inevitable.

We should try and beat the holiday rush. That is if people are avaliable. The fire rule could be a bit of a pain. I checked the area out around there today (the site's not open for a while yet) seems nice. I took some pictures.

Excellent location choice. In case anyone is trying to roughly place it, once you arrive at Exford, just turn into the minor road set behind the green close to the Crown Hotel, then drive past a small parade of shops (2 !) that face the village park/recreation ground and I think you turn right immediately after the first cattle grid (signposted Stoke Pero) and left at next junction named Porlock Post. Keep on that road over another cattle grid, past Pool Farm and the entrance is a little beyond there, on the left at the bridge. This is assuming you're arriving from say, Ilfracombe, Combe Martin, Simonsbath side. I can verify/clarify these details later if it helps, petrol and diesel being hard to come by!

Martin
04-04-2011, 06:10 PM
Well, if it's not too much trouble, why don't one of you local guys get over to Pool Farm and have a chat with the owner to see if we can set something up before the season starts proper? Like Skate says, could be lovely in the winter and a good base for North Devon NBC members.

I suppose it depends on what the site owner says. I would imagine he'd be thinking of opening up before Easter or for Easter weekend at least, which is the weekend of the Cornwall RV. I guess it would be worth a visit just to sound him out about using his site out of season for North Devon meets.

My flatcoat could always use another Exmoor walk - so we could be in that vicinity before too long. I could ask around to locate the owners, if it helps.

06-04-2011, 01:52 PM
Well I looked at pool farm, not a soul around. So I tried my luck down at the campsite, it's open! I had a short chat with a couple who said that a man came and collected the money between 9.00 - 9.30. I think it must have a new owner, someone from Bossington near Minehead. Anyway here's the important things to know.
Prices
Adults £6 per night
6-14 £3 pn
0-5 £1pn
Rules
No campfires execept within 3 meters of the river bank (for fire safety)
Minimum distance between tents 7m (again for fire safety)
No singing or noise making after 11pm
No radios
There are toilets and a shower and also a payphone, which is very handy. But i'm afraid Tom Bombadil there is no real ale tent. :D
Anyway that's all to know for now, i'll probably give the owner a ring or send him an email asking about out of season meetings. But I hope that the info has helped everyone.
Tom Bombadil
06-04-2011, 03:18 PM
That's ok, I have the swag with the built-in real ale option, or the Bevy-Bivvy, this week featuring Beer Grylls and Mears' Mild. Tastes awful - but you can live on it!

By the way, a little off subject, but if you like sites where fires etc. are permitted, Cloud Farm near Malmsmead is a nice uncomplicated little site for family or natural bushcraft folk, if you're ever visiting that area. It's in the Doone Valley, and we've camped there out of season Oct/Nov.:campfire:

Oh no the Cornish cream tea vs Devon cream tea debate has started again! :D It'll provoke another war between Devon and Cornwall. Quick ready the scone catapults and fire them from the hills of Dartmoor. Then Cornwall will respond by throwing kelly's ice cream at everyone in Devon-therefore giving the Devonians brainfreeze. And then Devon will counter attack by making some sort of cider cannon and....... Ooooh! Men in white coats. Hey what are you doing?!? ARRRGHHH!!! hheellpfopidcfvbnzbfnghjnxgbnkn j..........................................:)

Anyway a little recap on what time of year would people like to do this meet. Do people prefer the summer during the busy time, or wait till late summer/early autumn when things have quietened down a bit. I personally think it would be best to leave it till a bit later on in the year so that people have plenty of time to plan and set aside time for the meet. It would also mean that we cold use poolbridge without worrying about drowning in holidaymakers. :)

I'm flexible on this one. Picking up from other posts there seems to be a lot going on over the next couple of months that may make it difficult for some to make the visit. I know that you can never cater for all but it may well be better a little later. I am trying to get the use of some woodland at a few 'local-ish' farms but the old farmers are a little reluctant at the moment. I will keep working on this one and see what I can arrange as possible meeting places.

September when the kids are back at school is no problem for me and would probably make life easier due to dealing with scout camps and family holidays. Don't forget Jack that if you want a hand on this just drop me a note.

Thats the one. Not known as North Devon College now as someone decided the name doesn't fit. Now known as Petroc, who is the patron saint of that foreign land known as Cornwall. It kind of goes to show the mentality of the people I work for and why I am so eager to leave!

Right then i've been thinking and I reckon a good date(s) for the meet would be Friday 16th Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th of September At Poolbridge campsite. It would be over the third weekend of September and by then there shouldn't be a large amount of tourists around. There isn't any sort of weekend plan so people can do what they like during the day, you can even go off by yourself if you want. Oh and just to remind people the prices at Poolbridge are
£6 for adults
£3 for 6-14s
£1 for 0-5s (if there are any baby bushcafters out there :) )
Anyway if you're interested and you can make it just say so on the thread. Or if you have any questions just ask me.

I believe there are a few trees about, closer to the stream where we want to pitch up as thats where we can have fires on the go. Metal Mug has undertaken a recon to the site and has more detail on whats available, no doubt he will pick up this one shortly and tell you more.

Hi all, just to be clear... I take it that we are sticking with Poolbridge for the weekend of 16th Sept and that ideas for other locations are for additional trips after September ?

well can bivi on the ground or in hammocks under a basha as we have both types of kit, could set up in open using basha poles , but would prefer to be in the trees if possible?

hi i am new to this organisation..... i live in exeter. am i aloud to atend this?? also i am 15 and just find it so difficult to find anyone that likes or is interested in bushcraft, so i just want some people to be able to learn skills from and have a nice time. i dont have an amazing amount of equipment iether. it consists of a tent a hammock a tarp, 2 knifes (but rubbish ones), a million firesteel, fire making equipment, sleeping bag, mess tin and cup but not much. oh and the few bits and bobs that everyone has :) is there any thing you could recomend that i add to my small collection?? thankyou. i do not have that much knowledge of bushcraft but have always loved it and just want to learn more as i am absoloutly addicted to the outdoors. are there any meetings on dartmoor soon?? thankyou
happy bushcraft :)

hiya Elliot, im sorta new to this forum too, but not so new to meeting with random strangers off the internet and camping up for the weekend :P
havent yet sorted out a pass out for this meet but its a work in progress :)
as for "being allowed" i hope the regulars and admins dont mind me saying so, but these things are not "closed shops" if it was a private invite only meet, it would be organised away from the public forums... so in short, i would say of course you are allowed to attend. you will find bushcrafters/survival nuts/wild campers are a friendly lot and if there are any that are not... i havent met them yet! if i do manage to get out to this, i will be bringing (unless he has successfully morphed in to his ps3 by then) my 14yo son, so you may well have company of someone more your age rather than just oldies.
one thing i would say about knives, this campsite is public, you are under 16 and therefore cannot legally possess or use your knives (private land is a different matter) so please be discrete in your use of such
as for the rest of your kit, you have the basics covered, the only thing i would add if you are tarping, is a bivibag incase of the famous horizontal british rain! but no need to go spending more just yet, i am sure anyone will be happy to lend you any bits and bobs you find yourself without on the day.
one othe rthing, please dont think i am being patronising or the like, but i am a dad of a 23yo and 14yo lads and an 11yo girl, i wouldnt be overly keen to think my youngest two would be setting off to spend the weekend with a load of people i dont know. i guess someone will be dropping you off at least? why not get them to camp too? i have a tent/sleep kit i can lend them if they dont have their own (assuming i go of course, if not i would have thought someone else would be able to help on that front). sorry to be a killjoy on that front, but while i am sure everyone is just great, these sorts of meets are not formal things with risk assessments, liability insurances, CRB cleared 'staff' and disclaimers signed off by your parents.... so you will most certainly want to get your parents on side and confident that you will be safe and have plans in place in case you hurt yourself etc (its the outdoors as you say, camping with fire, sharp things and the like... these things can happen :( )
as for you finding it difficult to find like minded people by you..... you are the perfect age for scouting, its not the dib dib dob dob of yesteryear, wish i was your age again as they do all sorts of great stuff nowadays (though to be fair, i loved my time in the scouts too)
https://members.scouts.org.uk/join/join_youth.php if you want to enquire with them and your local explorer scouts are at http://iscaexplorerscouts.org.uk/

Elliot George, I would suggest that, as you are only 15, you need to get the agreement of your parents and they need to understand that these meetings aren't orgainsed activities but are groups of adults coming together to share a common love of the outdoors in general and bushcraft in particular. You will not be supervised, nor will anyone be responsible for your wellbeing. You must be able to get to and from the meet and you must be able to get away in an emergency and do deal with any crises that may occur.
It would be preferable if you could get an adult, preferably over 21, to accompany you and to be responsible for your well being.
Sorry to put such a negative spin on things but you cannot expect anyone to look after you, and your parents must understand that this isn't organised or sanctioned by NaturalBushcraft in any way. In particular, there isn't any insurance except any public liability insurance that the camp site may have.

Hi EG. I am also going to look at this one as the responsible adult I'm afraid. As a Scout leader I have to look after 25 of other peoples children but these mums and dads know that the leaders have been CRB checked and that their loved ones are only away for a couple of hours. On the same note my own son attends Cubs and I know, as much as I possibly can, that he is looked after by responsible and 'safe' adults and that the activities that are undertaken are monitored with the risks reduced as much as possible. Even when away on camp for a few days there are many other responsible and vetted adults present that can ensure the safety of everyone in our care and ensure that knives and axes, fire and water all remain safe.
The responsibility of looking after these youngsters is something I have chosen to do but with the help of many other adults that also choose to do the same. If something was unfortunate enough to happen then I have the backing and assistance of the Scouting Association to help and support me.
The situation that we have at these organised meets is very different. I would enjoy having the company of the younger generation and helping them develop the skills that comes with their enthusiasm. This is why I joined as a Scout Leader last year and regularly arrange supervised visits to woodland so that they can develop their interests. You would probably find many people on this forum would love to assist you on this one as well but I have to agree with Martin, without your parents express permission and full understanding of what these meetings entail, along with the fact that all are over 18 ;) then this may be something you just need to wait a little longer for or, as already mentioned, join a local group to start developing your skills, it really can be fun.

Well both of you are more than welcome. Like I said before, it can be a very adult affair but it would be refreshing to have some younger members for a change. We don't tend to get this unless it is an organised Family Gathering. At 15 I wouldn't particularly wan't anyone 'looking after' me either. Part of the reason for wanting a family member to accept responsibility is that you would pretty much have full reign to do what you wish, within certain boundaries of course. There is always some element of danger involved with bushcraft, knowledge makes it safer, you need to see the limitations and for the grups that will be there, we would be reassured to have your mum around whist we learn about you. Don't forget to warn your mum that this is roughin' it! It was a bit of a suprise for my wife when we did the first family gathering event - no showers and portaloos is considered luxury at some of these meets!

subject to a passout, i will be along most definately, i say most definately as just spoke with my son (will be 14 in august, so seems its becoming a meet for young and old "boys" alike...... as women are fond of saying, boys never grow up, just that their toys get bigger :P ) and he replied that he would like to come, but..... "it dont matter" what is it with teens and not expressing whats on their minds! lol. in short, he thought i liked doing these things on my own..... so cue the convo of "well yes, i do like having some time with mates around my own age (ie 25-65) but also like sharing the outdoors with him, just the same as he likes to have time away from adults with mates his age too, that dont mean to say he dont like spending time with me or his mum! bless, kids eh :P
poolbridge is far from roughing it i would say, it has flushing loos and mains water! i prefer taking a spade for the outgoings and boiling up the incomings lol
so, yes, a passout is highly likely, and look forward to meeting some new faces as well as meeting some of the known ones again too :)
@Elliot, glad you got things sorted with your mum to come along with her. seems that there will be a few guys around your age now, im more than happy for my son (Cory) to wander off on his own steam during daylight hours subject to mobile phone reception.... so the less bald/old/insert own comment for those the wrong side of 30, will be a choice of company for you all rather than the only option :)
just to prewarn those that dont know me, though crazysaint can vouch it isnt a problem for me..... i am not a bushcrafter, i am someone who likes it outdoors with a bit of a self suffiency slant.... in other words, you will never see me carving a spoon, i have a spork for that and if i lose my spork, i have fingers ;)

Here's the prices and the rules for those who want to know.

We stayed Friday night as well, were you on the south moor? We were near burrator reservoir but we were fairly low down so probably missed the clag although one side of my tent was fairly soggy in the morning. It was beautiful at about 6am, I just sat on a fallen tree for about half hour just watching a foal playing about and taking in the view. Magic :D

Yeah we were not far from Pupers Hill, so south east moor. There was a glimmer of the sun as it tried to burn through the cloud cover, but it never really succeeded where we were. Still not the worst I've seen on the moors.

Took a trip to Pool Bridge today just to have a nose around. The site is not very busy at the moment, only three pitches were in use so plenty of room available. Whilst I was there I had a little chat with the owners, an elderly couple that gave me the impression that they thought I was there to mug them !?! After a few minutes of talking I managed to get them to relax and found a few things out.
Firstly this is a commercial camp site with toilet and shower facilities, and as such clean water, so a bit of luxury is available. However should you be brave enough there are a few pools in the stream that runs through the site but personally I don't think you will find me having a dip!
There are some basic provisions available, all of which are in a freezer on site and paid for when the owners or their daughter come round to collect the site fees (£6 per night and don't forget its CASH). Sausages, burgers, steaks, milk, don't know about eggs but passed a few farms on the way that have those anyhow.
A sign on the entrance gate states that no wood either dead or alive is to be used from the site or surrounding woodland by order of National Trust and the site owners. Looking in the woods there isn't much to be had as most of the nearby wood has already been used. The owners sell logs and kindling for £4 a net. The fires themselves have to be within 3 metres of the riverbank and stone circles are in evidence from previous fires (LNT not foremost in some minds). I am going to bring some logs from home and if anyone else wants to bring some it will all help for those that want a fire to cook, or bring alternative means for cooking. Hobo stoves may be ok as twigs are always around somewhere.
As there are going to be a few of us going, and the nights tend to be late ones, there is an area at the far end of the site which is a little tucked out of the way and might be suitable for our needs. Its at the end of the track that runs through the site and accessed by crossing the stream on foot. Not difficult as stepping stones are there but if you bring a caravan you can push it yourself! The whole site lends itself perfectly for ground dwellers but despite being surounded by woodland not very good for the tree swingers. A few places might be suitable but looking realistically - bring a ground setup as the woodland is on a 45 degree slope and the trees within the site itself are spaced well appart.
Whatever you do DON'T use the post code that is on the sites web page to get yourself there! The post code must relate to where they live as it is a good five miles away from the camp site. The directions that are given on the web page (link available from Martins post earlier in the thread) are very good and Toms are pretty close aswell. You may well think that you have got lost as the road through the moors is a long one but you get there in the end. Let the loved ones left at home know that there is no phone signal due to being at the bottom of a very steep valley. Hope you have a head for heights as the road is a bit narrow at times.
Looking forward to seeing you good folks, let me know what you think of the pitch idea.

Zulu the Donkey. Its spooky and rather unnerving but folk here start going on about Zulus and in a 13th Century church we visited on our walk yesterday was a picture of Zulu the Donkey.
'The donkey 'Zulu' earned fame (and his portrait hanging on the church wall) by plodding twice a day for many months bringing timber for the roof from Poriock. Stoke Pero is mentioned in the Doomsday Book' An extract from http://exmoorencyclopedia.org.uk/contents-list/52-s/942-stoke-pero.html
Well it was a good weekend with laughs a plenty. Exmoor in typical style threw everything at us but a blizzard and by the time we left today the water table and river level had risen considerably. Lakes were forming all around us, and underneath the sleeping mats! I really felt sorry for the 30 or so school girls that were training on the moor, they were seriously soaked by the time they arrived on the site Saturday evening and then off again early on Sunday for much of the same. Our walk through the woods was tame in comparison but it is a truly beautiful place to have a wander. Thanks for the weekend guys and see you again soon.
I think theres a few star trek repeats on if you know what I mean...
