Many folk go for the dc3 or dc4 for sharpening in the field.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fallkniven-DC4-Diamond-Ceramic-Whetstone-/270357373927?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3ef28e23e7#ht_1163wt_905
Personally I prefer to sharpen at home.
Like Tony says, just use the back of your belt if you need to get the zing back on your edge..

For those of you that have been caught out like me by Evilbay http://www.thebushcraftstore.co.uk/fallkniven-dc4-combination-sharpening-stone-3986-p.asp
I am very interested in this thread as I have just bought my 1st knife after not having one since I was 16. I was wondering what you thought of this sharpening kit, and which is best.

Don't mean to hijack the thread.

I use a DMT diafold and it works very well, I have also heard good things about the Fallkniven DC3/DC4 though. http://www.dmtsharp.com/products/diafold.htm

I have never used a Lansky, but I have heard they are good if you can get on with them, but some folk find them fiddly.

The dc4 is bigger than the dc3. I own both.
The diamond side is for rough work if your edge is very dull. The ceramic side is to get th efinal edge. then you can strop it to get a strong edge and remove the burrs etc.
Hope that helps.

I am not a Knife officianardo so I may be setting myself up to be shot down here...! But I use a Moral clipper stainless and an Opinal carbon steel knife and in the field I just use a piece of fine wet & dry paper which is glued to the back of my Mora knife sheath as the means to restore an edge on my knives plus a strop on the back of my leather belt.

I've known a few people to do it that way. especially the opinel, as it has a flat grind. Plus the scandinavian grind of the mora is almost as easy to get an ok edge before the strop. In my opinion, if it gets the edge sharp and you don't upset the grind, it's perfectly fine.
