Can anyone recommend a website that would help me ID trees, Ideally a downloadable and one that would tell me various uses for different trees.

I found this but am hoping there are better out there.

I went to google images - for specific tree ID
Try this one http://www.naturedetectives.org.uk/download/id_leaves.htm for free downloads.

This is one of my favourite sites for tree identification, however it is an online tool only. I tend to collect samples and bring then home. Like Klause I also use the nature detectives site, it is not only good for kids, but the leaf and twig guides are quite handy for adults too.

As for uses, there are lots of resources on the web, but they tend to be application specific, one site is good for medicinal, one for edible, one for carving, etc...

Your best bet for a field guide is to spend a little and get the colins gem guides. Not what your after I know, but there is little else.

Here's another good site for tree Id (leaves, bark etc) but not uses...

http://www.woodlands.co.uk/owning-a-wood/tree-identification/ash.php

If you have a phone with a web browser & data connection then type any/all of the site addresses above into your browser and save as favorites and then you can go online in the field so to speak.

Thanks everyone. Looks like it'll be a combination of all your web finds, some photoshop, and a laminator..... waterproof A5 flashcards.

When I get a fair few finished as I want them I'll see if I can put it on here as a PDF download. If thats possible.

I always carry a pocket SAS Survival Guide with my gear. It has literally everything in it you need to know about the outdoors and stuff like tree and plant identification. Plus it's nice to have something to read once you get set up and kick back :) Always nice to have something like that as a reference aswell just incase.

As we are members of Woodland Trust,we were sent a handy little booklet on tree identification. The booklets are very good so invested in some of the others - fungi, flowers and butterflies. They are ideal if you can get a copy of them as the pictures are pretty good and contain info such as leaves and winter twigs for the tree version and edible as well as poisonous fungi in one of the others.

The little swatch booklets are ideal for carrying when you are out and about. The kids love them as it gets them looking at things rather than just walking around blindly.

Think I'll order this. Creating my own and not infringing copyrights seemed like WAY to much work. Thanks everyone, ALL the links have been useful.

For the price of them, would you not be better off just buying the Colins Gem British Wildlife book? Pack sized has all the basic Flora and Fauna in it, perfect for your needs.

Or download each of these and laminate them.

There are loads at the nature detectives website - never under estimate the value in some of the kids trust websites, and if you have kids you don't feel so stupid using them. :p

Ahh that British wildlife book must be the ones my folks got from the national trust, think they put their own cover on it though. I like the kids books, they have better pictures and talk in a language even the inf can understand haha

It would be really good for schools to I think as the kids need to learn stuff like this and not half the stuff they get filled with :)

We better stop there with the Ray stuff. I found a few good books in the local book shop (second hand of course) that had loads of info in about birds and animals, I'm sure if I look a bit harder they will have plants and trees too.

I agree, it's all held together in one package, not to mention it's normally a lot cheaper than paying for the ink, paper and laminator pouches LOL

These are the ones I use with my scout group when out and about. They have proved very useful along with loads of other stuff on the nature detectives site.
