The back story is this, the rope bridge and swings where set up for the kids, which they managed all day with no problem... but this is what happens when the big boys decide to play.

Not even a titter about the video... did any of the hundred or so people that have checked out the thread even look at the video? It's worth a look honest ;)

Great photo's and loved the SAS training video...!
I'm looking for the chance to get down to Ivan's place, I've been following the plot since Ivan first introduced himself on the forum but timings never been great and it's a bit of a jaunt from Wales but I will get there soon. Not sure I can make Whit bank holiday weekend due to other commitments (have to miss my own Wales mini-meet in May now...! and I had to miss the RV as well) but from June I'm much more of a free agent and will be taking up the next opportunity after then.

Right!! after careful consideration and character analysis , checking my diary of course , i have decided to go along to this meet , i thought why not ? i dont live too far away so if i dont like it i can be home in no time , you dont know if you dont try ! If i dont like the bloke or the place i am outa there , i will bring you a comprehensive report on my findings ( i have heard there is much merryment you know laughing/drinking and such like i have also heard there is a quiet end too, mixed with a bit of learning and walking , not too sure about that !) anyway wish me luck as i am going with an open mind . I might see you there then mate. I heard pretty much the same sort of things as you, even heard tell of some strange liquids made from apples, that can have odd effects on those who dare drink it. I was actually thinking of inviting you myself. It should be a good time, if not I might follow you back to your's.

Oi Oi Raven , that would be neat mate , didnt get chance to enjoy the RV, as issues at work meant an early departure...
Couple of things , i am not expecting everybody to commit to the whole 3 days , so anyone can come for any part thereof, also anyone localish who just wants to come and have a mooch /day visitor etc , come on over free of course , i can obtain/cut some blanks for carving etc , and i have access to allsorts of wood and i mean allsorts ! so if anyone wants a particular type of wood for something give me a shout , there is also a walk planned for the Sat , not obligitory of course , but about 7 miles not too rough going , taking in Pupers Hill, then Huntingdon Warren, Keble Martins Chapel, Huntingdon Cross on to Avon Dam the home to delicious hangi lamb ..

i can obtain/cut some blanks for carving etc , and i have access to allsorts of wood and i mean allsorts ! so if anyone wants a particular type of wood for something give me a shout
I love to carve. If I can be so forward as to ask, one thing I've struggled to get is a pole long and thick enough to try make a bow from. Otherwise, smaller things I'd like to carve are a chopping board, and I'd like to improve my spoon carving. I'll bring my hook knife and would appreciate some guidance on how to make a better spoon shape - mine end up being little bowls on the end of a stick. :(
But regardless, it'll be nice to just chill out, play in the woods and meet like minded people.
Hi Bernie , welcome aboard , i dont know too much about carving , but should be able to provide wood suitable for a bow and chopping board. if you need directions tel nos. etc give me a shout , look forward to meeting you

Hi Ivan
I'm starting to really look forward to it. I have a lot of questions but the forum says I can't send you a private message until I enable it, and I can't find that option.
I'm still new to how people do these get togethers, so here are my embarrassing newbie questions:
Kit: Is there anything special you'd like people to bring/not bring?
Meals: I read one meal is included (I won't take that for granted though). I assume we cook our own meals at a communal fire or private stoves as we please.
Poopin: Is there a long drop (or other facilities) or are we bagging and taking home?
Payment: I presume I pay on the first day/arrival in cash. (Not sure how long I'll stay yet, but could be just one night or not sleep over. It depends on whether my wife and kids need me back home.)
Schedule: Is there any schedule to things like lessons or chats, or will we play it by ear?
Help: What can I do to help make it easier for you and more fun/enjoyable for everyone?
Phew - what a list eh? :)

Having been a newbie myself and wondered the very same things here are my experiences on a few of the above:
Bring the kit you need as everyone else will bring what they need. If anyone is in need of something there is always another there willing to help, this is what makes everyone here so great.
Bring enough food to cater for yourself but I learnt pretty quickly that the evening could well be spent around the fire cooking up little treats for the group to try. Matts angus steak at Dave Budds was 'ansom. Not knowing this myself, my contribution ended up being a peanut and chocolate raisin bannock bread that seemed to take forever to cook! It is a very pleasent evening however and don't forget to take something for the evening tipple.
As for helping out, this tends to happen naturally when you get to the meets.
Hope this helps, Ivan will obviously tell you specifics.
Hi Bernie, glad you are looking forward to the meet .Jus_young has kindly helped with some answers. I'll do my best to answer all your questions hopefully without repeating what Jus_young has already said. Try and come reasonably light because there is a 1.2km walk from the car parking area to the site and because of the impact on the land I only want to use the quad for emergencies really, but don't worry there will be people to help carry if you bring something heavy. See further post for list of things available. There is one planned group meal which will be on the Saturday night legs of lamb cooked under ground and veg. Poopin! I have two elsan toilets and a thunder box, so no need to bag and remove. Payment cash on arrival, pay for the first day if you like and if you feel you can stay come and find me. Schedule: there is a walk planned which you will be informed about when you arrive for the Saturday. Other than that there will probably be some carving, spoons etc. bow drilling, bow making, but no planned time for those events. Want it to be a relaxed and informative experience where others are happy to share their skills and knowledge which they are all willing to do. Also maybe some foraging, tracking, shelter building etc. So feel free to join in which interests you. Re: help come along enjoy the experience and see that we are all like-minded souls enjoying a special few days at a very special place!
Hope this helps
atb Ivan...
Hello everyone , just a couple of things , i felt i ought to mention . The powers that be cant name them for libel purposes , have in their wisdom , noted quad activity across the moor , when not being relevant to checking stock , collecting stone for wall damage etc. "i dont have any stock , and bushcrafters dont count ! " So not just for those reasons , and i get dizzy going up and down lots ! impact on the land /site and because bushcrafting is supposed to be minimal and because i think i have most heavy items on site , i will be making every effort to keep quad trips to a minimum . On a positive note , including myself there will be three sherpas , willing and able to assist . So with that in mind please come light !! Right this is a Freddyfish idea , an inventory . So here goes,
Loads of various sized cooking/frying pots and pans
1 x dutch oven
1 x tripod (but loads of metal stakes to fashion your own)
2 x 13ft patrol tents
2x3 man tents
2x2 man tents
10 fire grills of different size
2x elsan toilets ( 1 in tent )
spades , axes. rope , paracord, etc.
wheelbarrows, folding tables , lockable storage, first aid posts, fire pits etc.
even duvets , pillows for the less back to nature types !
cooking utensils and stuff i have forgot !
Any question/queries etc please ask .
Thankyou for being understanding
atb Ivan...
As a footnote;
1x 4.5m mess tent
1x 5m square suspended tarp with seating for carving etc.
1x DD travel hammock and tarp
various tarps
All in the above two posts are of a first-come first-serve basis! But we are good at sharing!
atb Ivan...

Thanks so much Ivan; I'll have everything I need in my 80l backpack which I can walk a few miles with no worries. You can put me on the sherpa list if you like; I'm always keen to help if I can. My only problem is controlling my enthusiasm. I very seldom get to enjoy time in the woods so when I do, I'm like an overgrown kid on Christmas day.

hey Ivan, have we got a list of definite's for the w/end yet or are there some still to confirm? looking forward to to seeing the site in temperatures above -5 !
Hi Raven, still a few to confirm from Natural Bushcraft, but about 25 from the other site , most came on the last one and are a good bunch , couple of newbies too , which is great ! Most of the NB members are close enough, and know the directions to make a last minute decision . Oh yes a lot greener , prettier and warmer than last time ! Should be at least + 16 .

A question about arrivals and departures: Can I arrive any time? (I assume I can leave any time.)
I ask because I doubt I'll be able to get there after work today, so I'd like to arrive at a reasonably early hour tomorrow, to make the most of the day there. Then I'm not sure about what time to come home on Sunday - depends on what my wife has planned for us.
Hi Bernie, arrive whenever you want pal , early as you like ! you will see as you pull in the drive , a gate on your left , park in the field by the other cars and follow the directions , any doubts ring the numbers , and someone will come and get you .
See you tomorrow !!

I was going to start another thread, but it seems appropriate to keep the pictures of the event together with the build up.
I arrived on Friday evening and was met at the car park by Andy (I hope I get names correct; I'm ruddy awful with names. Faces I never forget, but names to faces not so.)
It didn't take long before Ivan had helped me select a suitable spot just off the path on the way down from the main gathering camp to the training section lower down.

After a hearty meal, we were joined by four French visitors who nearly found themselves lost on Dartmoor. They joined the group, as did two entertainers from Somerset ;) and a right jolly time was had. I couldn't keep up with it so I went to turn in.
Early this morning I woke and eventually decided to pack up and head home at 5am. Not a sole was stirring. I had a hunch why:
http://usxnna.bay.livefilestore.com/y1p-0LpwbB2eM4Pa4YwZSHSXNRbGvm4qRgmrElheEh9JuxnhhQ3yYE dQ1BGzN0CJ61dGmAjL7laxauUc3ULfzAIZV-dDSOVKY7W/IMAG0496.jpg?psid=1
I had a little job getting the fire going again. I crept into the main tent to borrow an axe (was closer than going back to my tent for mine), managed to split some pine logs small enough to take after I'd raked the coals together. I filled the kettle and got a nice boil going for at least 5 minutes whilst I collected some more wood (nearly all the wood had been consumed the night before).
I sat down to a well earned coffee with just the company of a few small birds and the absolute peace and quiet of the woods around me:
http://usxnna.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pDd604BXpN57AfaILCk1vl5Ah3NpS1BQ2NS11FzLFDPjE_T4 pOO1AsS-BBvIejIDXQE2ZJml4H5ruFrQ2X0op-ESsF995WsC9/IMAG0497.jpg?psid=1
After enjoying my cuppa, I returned to pack my tent and kit. I felt ready for a hike with my backpack all prepared, but I didn't have the heart to wake Ivan just to say thank you and goodbye:
http://usxnna.bay.livefilestore.com/y1psQuyz2S3IKfwZMs14Tfea-9FN6tSqdH21viuFVbssyQRo96oHIMOVtOw41pTUmclfvc8pu76 xiD-3VacdQHHbsaewEauzt1y/IMAG0500.jpg?psid=1
So I decided I'd leave camp in as good a state as I could. I put all the cans and bottles to one side (not bagged because I didn't want to make a noise). I shored up the fireplace and left the boiled water in the kettle, ready for the next person:
http://usxnna.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pqi2gbWLh5Ick5_644V4aWtyb63tx7xzndZWDgdBF-qF_lg2MJjhUBbq6eqwqdL3KrKH6bIXR6R2-6CJj8VBMS8q9Sz3BVUUs/IMAG0502.jpg?psid=1
I headed back to the car and on my way home, where I'm now writing this.
Thanks to Ivan and friends for a great time in his special place. The above photos (and more photos of the woods and trees that might not interest everyone) can be viewed in higher resolutions at the link below. The poor quality of the photos is because I used my phone - sorry.

Nice Job Bernie - I'm going down early July and can't wait.
Looks like I'm going to have to get in some drinking practice beforehand though as I'm obviously not up to the req'd standard yet...!

Hi Bernie,
Really good to meet you thanks for helping make the meet a success, oh and thanks for my spoon! Sorry we didnt get chance to say goodbye. Nice photos apart from the one of bushcrafting at its base level, hard to believe I get all of that kit in a 35 litre rucksack! Hope you had a good time and to see you soon.

In all fairness, I think the chairs blew over in the night. One even blew over again after I'd put it up.
It wasn't all Bushcraft; there was that of course, but also a good laugh and social side to it. I think we were all there to enjoy ourselves in different ways. Some staying mostly to themselves, one or two quietly busy getting meals and fuel, and most of us just relaxing and enjoying the outdoors and the company of like minded people.

thanks to Ivan and Katie for looking after us all, also thanks to Andy for being so free with his help and advice (as well as his bad jokes and dry humor) and thanks to everyone for being there and making it a great weekend!

Great report of events Bernie. It was great to meet you, as was it you too Raven. I have a few photos of the group bow drill (organised and presented by Andy), lamb hangi (Ivan for the lamb, Andy for the pit, and Fox for the oxtail and veg) and native birds talk (given by the kind Roger)
A good weekend that would have been even better with some nice weather, but can't get it all the time. A great bunch of lads and lasses. Hope to see some more of the NB folk, at the TT meet in July, that couldn't make it this time.

Hope we can make it as interesting as the last one, with better weather to boot.

Plenty out on the moors. Local farmers loose approximately 10% of their stock every year. Some of natural causes, as well as young or particularly weak, to large foxes.

Being totally honest, I prefer smaller numbers too. However I try and grab every opportunity to get out in the woods I can.
Ivan's place is ideal, even with nearly 30 people there, you don't notice the numbers. They all spread out and do their own thing mostly.

i like that ability too, though i am a very social animal, i do like a bit of down time (and others need a rest from me too! lol) so to be able to sidle off down the track, feel like your all alone in the woods and just enjoy a bit of birdsong and babbling brook without feeling any pressure to go and be socialble is great.....
equally as great is the option to return to the fire circle and chat, joke and laugh with a load of nice and kind people
the woods are lovely, the people that go there are lovely, but they are just ingredients......... its the likes of Ivan, Katie and Adam that are the catalysts to make the place truely special

Oh Mr Ajuna, you spoil us with your flattery, but don't forget, anything we do would be pretty pointless if people didn't come and enjoy it.
