I had a left hand custom stock Theoben .22 carbine years ago with an air piston (not a spring - cutting edge at the time) and a couple of BSA's before that. I loved that Theoben but during hard times back then I had to sell it and I've not had another air-gun since. I do miss shooting though.

Just ordered an Edgar Brothers XVI with a Hawke Nite-Eye 3-12x50 AO Mil Dot scope for my personal Xmas prezzie (I've worked really hard all year, honest!). It's to replace my old Air arms TX200 Mk I.

This is my gun, like Ashley says, it doesn't get used anywhere near as much as it should do but I did manage to have a bit of a target plink at work today. Managed to get a decent grouping (I won't embarrass myself with details ;)) and is plenty powerful enough.

i have an air arms s400 pcp mtc mamba 4-16x44. i can get sub 5mm groups with it at 35yrds and they open up to about half inch at 45yrds.

mince? its not that powerful, and 45yrd is really pushing the limits for hunting and i would only take a shot at that range on live quarry if there was no wind at all.

Hi again guys. Been having some good autumn success with my HW97K, Ive put an old HW77 stock on it now as the fancy thumbhole thing that was on it when i bought it just wasnt doing anything for me. Also put a far nicer Scope on her. a Simmons WTC 3.5-10x40.
Have some lovely woodland/field permission ten minutes walk from my house (bonus :)) and have been getting out as much as possable.
Photo can be removed by mods if unappropriate, but ive tried not to show blood etc.

I started as a kid with a BSA Mercury, a beauty of a rifle. Then a TX200, another stonker. After a stint in the forces and laying down countless rounds down the ranges, I got bored of shooting, then I went and got me a Theoben Fenman a few years back. I toyed with the idea of a precharged, magazine rifle, or an underlever, but the simplicity of the Fenman bit me. Its my favourite rifle so far, and a great stopper, just need to use it more often.

Heres mine, with a little bunny taken at a friends place. He has a massive bunny problem and I try to help by thinning the population down. The bunnies are always eaten, the liver heart and kidneys cooked for the dog. Rifle is about to be tinkered with, getting a regulator fitted and possibly a slightly better scope.

I got a new gun on the weekend! - My first Shotgun as a birthday present from a friend Nathan, couldn't believe it :) ... not a rifle I know!... But man I'm itching to get hold of it, strip it and get to know it as unfortunately I haven't got it my house yet (waiting on cabinet & licence first).

But still Myself, Nathan, Martin & Rich went shooting on the weekend, so I was able to use it under Nathan's licence, first shot with my first gun & I bagged a wood-pigeon, was stoked.

some good lookin rifles. Ive got a BSA lighting, one down from martins. Alas! i dented the silencer chasing a squrriel through a boggie woodland (the little bark stripping fiend lived to tell the tale!)
I can hit beer bottle tops at 20m all day long but when i go out on a rough shoot i cant hit a barn door with a tractor! which is a shame cos i really want to try squrriel.
also i got a 4yr old golden lab, shes got the makings of a great gun dog but is she too old to train? Any thoughts?

A few years back i had a rescue golden lab who was 5 or 5 when i got her, took no time in training her to pick up shot rabbits. its in their blood :) As for the rough shooting thing yes its a lot different to shooting targets but once you get your first bunny, pigeon etc it will become a lot more natural and your heart wont be slamming into your chest quite so bad.

Borrowed a chronograph from my mate Dave (Davyl200) to see what power my Theoben was pushing out and got a big shock! Hoping it was up near 12 ft lbs but actually came out at 4!!!! So a visit to the local gun shop and several hundred pounds later a new gun was ordered. Decided on an air arms s410 carbine with a Hawke 4-16 x 50 scope. Picking it up Tuesday and can't wait to get out there and catch some dinner. At least the pellets will get as far as their target now :)

I got a B2 (cheap skate I know) and hated the nasty toffee apple varnish finish, so I rubbed it down and was going to re-varnish it but I discovered the stock had more filler in it than you could shake a stick at. So I painted it matt black and I think it looks loads better than the toffee apple varnish.
It is b!tch'in powerful though.

I did also have a Spanish thing, I can't remember the name of it.
It had a recoilless action with a floating barrel, which worked really well. After pulling the trigger there was so little recoil you could watch the pellet thru the scope all the way to the target.
It was heavy though, so I sold it to a collector, not many of them around apparently.

Got myself a BSA .22 underlever that I have had for years. Ideal for bunnies and pheasant that I used to shoot for my hawk. It hasn't been out of the cabinet for a good couple of years now. Used to go out a fair bit with a former employee with his 22 rimfires and 303. Always had plenty of venison for the table. Unfortunately lost touch now but would love to get out again.

hi aman, a good starter rifle would be a HW spring rifle. hw80, hw77, hw90, hw95, hw97 to name but a few. these are very good quality spring rifles, i would say the best quality spring rifles on the market today along with air arms springers. you can pick up a second hand weirchauch (hw) for around the £200 and a scope for £30. this will rpovide you with a air rifle accurate and powerful enoguh to take pigeons, rabbits and squirresls to 30yrds!

Today is a GOOD day, went to good Ol Trago Mills, gave the man £34.99 and walked out with a SMK B2 Custom, Cheap as hell, but still sends the pellets flying with plenty of whack, This is going to be my boys training rifle as its Birthday time in April and I have set my sights on a Airmagnum 850xt. for about £300, 8 shots, synthetic stock. using 88g air can.
Gotta say for the money on the B2 you cant go wrong.

Bought this rifle last week, it's a Webley Stingray II .22. Was second hand but in excellent condition and looking forward to getting out with it.

Haven't shot for a few years so very rusty but hoping it'll come back quickly.

So now I'm good to go if we do the airgun weekend in April.

It's been zeroed now to 35 yards.

I'm not taking any chances with the new legislation, so the keys and pellets are kept well away from the locked-up rifle. :)

Hopefully, it'll see some hot full frontal bunny action as soon as I get my transport back from the repair shop.

Thanks Aaron :), Must say its taken me a month to get used to it after the switch from my HW97K, Its a lot lighter thats for sure and the fact that you dont have to hold it correctly and can lean it on thigs was very strange to me. have put 2000 pellets thru it now and its become more second nature and am having great success at 45-50 yard bunnys using "Hunters Vermin" shooting sticks. And headshooting pigeons is a dream now . I always took heart/lung shots with the .22 HW97K

I'm just trying to get back into airgunning after a twenty year layoff. I used to own a Sharp Innova, an Original 50 and an Anshutz 335 back in the day. Sold up in 1990. I saw an SMK TH208 for sale yesterday and went to see it tonight. The guy said he had bought it new and replaced the barrel weight with a silencer (no markings) He also bought the gun slip to go with it. He said he had only used it for an hour at his local range and it had been gathering dust since.It looked new so I bought it. Here are some pics of the package.

That's a Marlin Golden 39a in .22lr and a Ruger Single-Six convertible in .22lr/.22wmr. Both are used, but new to me. I looked up the serial number on the Marlin and found it was manufactured in 1973. Can't wait to go give 'em a pop!

I have a BSA Lightining .22 Great wee rifle . Roll a bunny over at 40 yards easy and its just the job for pickin off sky rats in the trees.
hardly shoot with it now but always make sure its clean and workin fine.

Basicly, you may own any air rifle that does not exceed 12ft/lbs. Anything above this power and you have to have a Firearms Certificate. FACs are not given out very easily and yopu have to have a gun safe, have a safe place to use the rifle and will also be asked to show good causefor wanting to possess one.

I had more "trouble" getting an FAC for my .25 than any of my rimfire and centre fire rifles.

Well, at least you have an option without having to go get yourself a lisence. Here Air rifles of any power are considered the same as manual action rimfires and any shotgun other than pump or semi :P Oh, and paintball markers as well.

I have move on to a PCP Daystate huntsman classic in .177. My .22 Fenman is on long term loan to my brother-in-law. (Hope to get it back someday).

Going out with him on one of my permissions tomorrow afternoon until dark but not many rabbits about, plenty of squirrels and pigeons though. Still it is always good to be out. Will dig out some pics soon.

Hi Guys.
Accuracy is more important than power. Always go for brain shots and never shoot beyond the limits of your skill. If you are unsure of your shot then dont pull the trigger.
The answer is constant practice. I fire at least 100 shots in practice for every one I fire at live quarry. Shooting Hunter field target is good for practice and great fun.

Agreed - good stalking and following the 4 principles of musketry/marksmanship teamed with plenty of practice

The position and hold must be firm enough to support the weapon
The weapon must point naturally at the target without any undue physical effort
Sight alignment (aiming) must be correct
The shot must be released and followed through without disturbing the position

Know your limits and those of your equipment then there shouldn't be any wounded animals - just clean kills

Just got my theoben fenman back from long term loan to my brother-in-law and hunting buddy (Mrs Doc is the other one). He has just bought an air arms S200 in .177.
Tried it out yesterday on the club range and managed to shoot a 10 shot one hole group at 40 yards from a bi-pod. Very impressed, an excellent piece of kit. very well made.

If only you were closer; I'd happily help with that problem, especially if I could take some for the pot. I'm tempted to visit the common up the road from me, but I don't think hunting is allowed there and I have no suitable weapon. I guess it's just horse meat from Tesco for me. :(

Have a nice little BSA Airplinker but more usually use the 12bore or the rifle.

I agree with the above posts about shooting within abilities and good marksmanship principles. Definitely good solid advice.

The hardest part of shooting though can be finding permissions especially when in a new area.

It looks very much like my Westlake, the name is printed/stamped on the back of the barrel above the trigger. I believe they're made in China and are surprisingly good for the money.

I bought mine on spec because my excellent old BSA Buccaneer was nicked.

Very nice collection. The Webley MK3 and Airsporter bring back some good memories. They were the top guns to go for when I first started shooting as a boy.

Hi chaps! This is my small collection, posting dependant I shall be on the shotgun licence train to add to the collection, the wooden stock was a gift to my brother when he joined up, probably almost 24 years old and not sure what model it is, very cheap I expect.. The black plastic stocked weapon I believe is a Gamo CFX this was given to me today by a mate who owed my £60 from when I paid for him to come on my stag do!! I tried to tell him NO! I bought a Stoeger X20 Suppressor .177 with the stock scope last year as an entry into learning to shoot. It's a springer rifle and I'm really struggling to get consistant accuracy with it. My groups are all over the place! I know the rifle is zero'd well, I've put about 1000 pellets through it so far, so I'm sure it's down to my hold and trying to handle the recoil. When I pull the trigger, I jerk upwards slightly with the tension of the trigger and sudden jerk of the recoil. I wanted a springer so I never had to rely on having an air supply when I get to the point I'm confident to shoot live quarry. I've adjusted the trigger so that the second stage action is close to the first and that has helped. Can anyone offer any advise on my hold and follow through with this type of air rifle?

I may be wrong but it sounds as though the air rifle has a terrible trigger pull; far too many of them are awful.

Probably not; sorting bad trigger pulls out would cost more than the rifle cost in the first place - sorry

A good trigger is important but there are other things to consider as well.
A light hold is necessary when using a springer as it must be permited to recoil.If you use a tight hold to control the recoil it will shoot a group which will look more like a shotgun pattern.
Good follow through is essential. This means that you must keep your head down on the stock until the pellet has hit the target. Many people raise there head to soon to see if they have
hit the target which pulls the shot before the pellet has left the barrel.
You need to try as many brands of pellets as possible as all brands dont suit all guns even guns of the same make and model often prefer different brands of pellets.When you have found
the brand that your gun likes best, stick with it and practice practice and more practice.
Last thing-join an airgun club you wont regret it.

Sounds just like me with my old rifle. It had a good recoil, so I had to learn how to hold it properly. How are you resting your gun..? A springer needs to be cushioned to absorb the kick because the pellet does not leave the barrel before the recoil. Do not rest the gun on a hard surface. I was advised to rest the gun on a bean bag or similar, or on my hand turned thumb up (hard to explain but it works well as a cushion).
Practice practice practice is your best friend.

As a newbie, I've only just come across this thread. It has prompted me to dig out my old Air Rifle, which to be honest, I ever only used for target practice in the garden. i am now however thinking about turning my attention to the odd Rabbit or Wood Pigeon, we get a lot of both in the garden.
I don't know anything about Air Rifles, so I have no idea as to the suitability of this gun, perhaps somebody will advise. It is about 20 years old, but I did clean/oil quite regularly and it appears to be in very good condition. The make is Air Arms tx 200. (.22)

well if its pushing out near 12ft1b then its a superb rifle for game.
i had one years ago and found it fitted the bill perfectly,if my memory serves me correctly have they got an inertia system built into them making them recoiless :confused2:...atb kev

I can't remember any recoil, it's a long while since I used it, but I do remember it was extremely accurate! I'll do some more research and try it out over the weekend.

heres my Hatsan Mod 60s pushes a consistant 11.8/7 ftlb hoping on fitting a silencer and carbining the barrel by a few inches as at 52" its a bit long... dosnt get used as much as it should tho

Bought myself a new trigger for it, a WWT2 from a Gunsmith in Wales, only £25. Removes the long second stage. Will provide a update as to its accuracy when I've fitted it. Thought it was worth trying something with the rifle.
