Yeah - macaroni cheese is a bit '70s nostalgic like chicken supreme and canneloni....but....pasta is good and cheese...well - more than good so yes. However these days we've been spoiled by the slightly more "s'fist'ca'ed" pasta'n'sauce recipes like cheese and broccili, which takes me back to my Peak district wild-camping cuisine of the '90s! Anything with cheese is good to me. You could probably convert me to Islam with the offer of large volumes of cheese!!

I'll tell you what kind of "mac n cheese" we eat over here on the left side of the pond.

I make a roux with a couple of tablespoons of melted butter and a splash of flour, slowly add some milk while whisking the mixture to keep it smooth until I have about 3 1/2 to 4 cups of liquid. Then I add some EXTRA (much emphasis on EXTRA) sharp cheddar cheese, most likely from Vermont or New York because nobody else in the world can make cheddar like it, it's the kind of sharp that makes the muscles in your jaw hurt a bit when savoring it, it's the kind of cheese that one does not chew, rather let's it slowly soften and melt on the tongue (as much as it will because it's some crumbly stuff...) Anyway, about 8-12 oz of shredded cheese goes into the creme sauce to melt, then fresh ground pepper is the only spice I add to it. Pour the resultant cheese sauce over some cooked whole wheat pasta (shape of my choosing on that day) sprinkle with breadcrumbs and bake in an oven at about 350 degrees (F, not C :D ) for a little under an hour or until the top is golden brown and the sauce is bubbling up around the sides.

So, yeah, I like "mac n cheese." I've even been known to eat the cheap stuff out of a box on a hike, not often, but I've done it.

Mac and cheese sucks btw, unless your starving, and its pine cones or mac n cheese. I'll eat it, but only if there isn't anything on the menu

Incidentally, when you say "it's so sharp it makes the musces in your jaws hurt" we have a similar (but typically shorter) expression over here: "It makes yer tabs laugh!" (tabs = ears)

Hey Mike, we have that stuff down here in the lower 48 as well. I grew up on it, and ate it many times in my poor childhood. My wife makes Kraft Macaroni & Cheese for my twins every once in a great while and I usually sneak a spoonfull or two for nostalgia's sake. :D

Bigzee, you folks in the Mother Country always seem to have an expression that simplifies some lengthy bit of American-ese. I'd try using "it makes yer tabs laugh," but I think I'd have to explain it too many times to make it worthwhile. I'll just laugh inwardly when my "tabs are laughing" over a bit of good cheese.
