I've edited fish's post to contain the video I *think* he might have been talking about, I can't tell for sure as the link was broken.

Excellent! I will use this with my scouts at camp, after having a go myself of course. Wouldn't want to make a fool of myself now would I?

Try an Elderflower one too...a bit easier IMHO!

*Grab yourself a length of Elderflower (this one was snapped off by some mega citizen). It needs to be about a finger thickness. This stuff was just under and a little thin.
*Cut to whistle sized lengths and carefully peel the bark off with a knife at 90 degrees and either do a flat or 45 degrees mouthpiece (I like the former as it looks like a policeman's whistle). Also, cut the notch on the top, about a third of the way along and a third down-A 90 degree and 45 degree cut).
*Use a small stick to push the foam like middle out. You are taking the pith at this stage=D
*when fully cleaned out find a stick about the same size and cut a small piece to block the end. use a little PVA glue if needed.
*Same sized wood for the blowing end but shave about 1-2mm off the top and leave it slightly longer so you can pull it out if you need to reshave the mouthpiece.
*Once you have a sound cut the mouthpiece to shape. they also sound a bit like a policeman's whistle.

I remember someone making me a whistle when I was little out of elder bark, they tapped all round a short cut off branch to get the bark off in one piece but I cannot remember how the mouthpiece was formed. Possibly one end was pinched and a hole cut in the tube as for an ordinary whistle.

This vid on making a birch bark whistle is the way my elder one was made I think.
