Judging from the size of some of those quartz fragments I would have thought they would have knocked chunks out of the blade. Not a good idea as are a lot of the things shown and demo'd by Bacon Grylls

I seem to recall Ray Mears using a Quartz slurry on one of his 'tracks' 5 minute demos.

It sorta reminds me of how you sharpen a straight razor. You use paste and a leather strop, i've no idea what's in the paste. I suppose the only way to find out if it works is to get a cheapy knife and try it.

In a situation where you have little other option it might be ok but I thought his knife came with a sharpening stone on the sheath? He must have forgotten due to the lack of food...
