View Full Version : D.I.Y. bucksaw

Have thought about buying, or making, a bucksaw for a couple weeks now. Given the cost of some, the looks of others, and the examples others have made, I decided to have a go.

This is what I have done so far. Needs a little more finishing work to make it prettier, but it works, and doesn't look too bad.

The materials:

1 x 21" bow saw blade £6.99 (Bahco)
51" of 2x1 PAR pine (free, laying around workshop)
1 x 1" x 1/4" PAR ash (also free)
2 x 1/4" x 1 1/2" bolts
2 x 1/4" wing nuts
2 x washers
49" x camo paracord

The frame components, cut to length...

Blade in, cord tightened, slight shape to stiles...

Next step is to round all corners and dye, wash, or varnish the woodwork.

That looks really good mate I need a workshop I will have to build a shed I think :)

you need some tools to build your shed, you need a shed to build your tools, it's a vicious circle of the tool shed. LOL

Thanks Ben. It's not that hard to make most of the stuff I make. Most of it's been done before in some way or another, but I like to try and make them to my specs instead, if I can.

Thats the whole idea I think your basically learnig how it was done instead of some mass produced item and one day you can pass it on to someone who would like to know how to it to :) thus the craft continues I think.

Just taken it down to stain. Got a shot of it broken down as well as laid out drying.
Smoothed all edges and corners too.

It's one of the easiest projects I have tried so far. I don't mind it looking a little ropey, as it's more traditional...least that's what i tell myself lol.

Errrrrr, I've been stacked at work and heavily distracted by all my other unfinished projects :D All other pending projects (including bucksaw!) are now on hold until the coracle is finished, hopefully get some work done on it this week. Just gotta finish sewing round the stern and paint her up :D

haha, look forward to seeing it get wet. She looks great so I have complete faith in it.

The basic frame only takes around 20 minutes to half hour to knock up, then the level of finish is up to you I guess.

Ye but i am making it from 6 inch diameter logs lol, so i have to first make them into board like things.

Oh, cool. Was thinking of making one out of foraged materials at the weekend. Will be interesting to see how your's turns out.
