The word Hermit has been applied to many a person seeking a lifestyle of solitude in the pursuit of religious enlightenment. However it also applied to ferryman and gate keepers who lived a remote life from the rest of society.

The origins of the word are from the latinisation of the greek eremites, which means 'of the desert'. Hence the popular stereotype image of an old man in the desert.

Religious Hermits were often sought out for spiritual guidance and ironically never achieved the level of solitude they were seeking.

So you be a Hermit my friend, and I'll join you in my own solitude. :p
