One of the most beautiful countries on earth, with mountains, forests, some caledonian original forest, lochs, rivers, and you can wander and camp wherever you like !

At least you don't have a big body of water between you and Scotland, you can at least drive there. Lol

I have a big love of Scotland. Not been for a few years now though..
I think some of the game keepers and Lairds may have something to say about camping and wandering where you like though..

I've been up to Scotland a few times with my dad, the best scenery I've ever seen!

I didn't know this until a few months ago, on special occasions my uncle (mums brother) wears a kilt. I asked him why, he said that his mum was from Scotland. So I guess that makes me partly a scot?

I sense jealousy again, I apologise as Martin often gets this obsession with my car, he can't handle the fact that I've driven more miles in my car & that he doesn't have lichen on his bumpers.

Slainte var !, just joined folks, had a couple of rounds of lurking round the site, first impression SIZE matters, I've been a forum user for several years now and know that 'pro-boards' have several formats for their forums-BIG ONES (like this one) and more user friendly and compact ones (I'm sure Ashley the site guru will be aware of these)-not for me to choose-only to comment upon-KISS
anyhoo my name is Jim, I live near the foothills of the Trossachs national park and have been an avid 'roamer' for years.
I wish you all a happy and prosperous New year, "may yer lums reek lang"

Hi Klause, the Caledonian forest has all nearly vanished, there is still a large tract of original forest left which is situated to the west of Loch Ness in Invernesshire, there are various small remnants dotted around Scotland, the most southerly being around the area of Callander just north of Stirling, you can tell your in 'old' forrest by the scale of the trees and the 'look' of them they have a distinctly 'Jurassic park' feel.

Thinking Dumfries as cheap on train with bike, get of at Gretna and travel the coast slow, slow, end up in the forest area

I totally agree pal. You forgot to mention the more civilized society that has free dental care and manages to educate students without loans. Not to mention the countless world beating inventions like the telephone, television, tarmacadam etc...

Now there's snow on the ground, maybe even the midges have gone away for a bit?

They do have quite a few advantages over us south of the border, but them midge critter's up at Kinlochleven wear tackety boots and have six inch fangs and eat sassenachs for breakfast. I know I've been there.

Interesting thread, this one; I have a half-baked plan to have a wander around Galloway Forest area at the back end of march or early April with just me and my dog, hoping that the weather won't be too harsh and the midgies won't be out at that time!
I don't know the area at all, have a rough plan to park somewhere near Clatteringshaw Loch, wander up past the north side of Lock Dee (my wife's name, no other reason!) and round glen Trool then back over Curlywee because I like the name. A slow two-nighter, looking for wildlife...
...any comments on this rough itinerary greatly appreciated!
