We recently purchased a book titled 'Devon for Kids' that contains a whole load of info on things to do and places to go. It also contains the details of numerous campsites also stating which ones allow camp fires. Details are also given for Dartmoor and Exmoor. They also have titles for Cornwall, Dorset New Forest & Isle of Wight, Lake District and general info for Britain and Europe.

Just checked out their website http://www.footprinttravelguides.com/live/index.php and they have books for everywhere!

It looks like Exmoor's ablaze on the map. :D

Looking through all three sites, I'd say Martin's original link had the easiest to use, easiest to understand, map. Good work.

I've stayed here earlier this year when I did Snowdon it has to be one of the most picturesque I been too and they allow fires if you buy their wood ! (joint 1st with the campsite in Boot at the foot of Scarfel but no fires.)

just one point can be quite breezy off of the lake so pick a sheltered spot!

Nice looking site there, may have to pop along to it for my next snowdon mission.

Good list here:

Not sure if it's up to date.

Thanks Martin that website looks good. Although I would ideally love to go wilderness camping I thought I should get to know my gear and set up in a more campsitey mode ( also being a woman its a bit unnerving to plunge straight into wilderness camping.. though exciting too!) but hope for now to find sites that at least are a little closer to real camping out and allow fires.
thanks again

We are SO lucky here in California. As long as you use, or make, a fire ring your good to go just about everywhere.

Yup, it's a whole different world over there; I never heard of a campsite without a fire either before I got on the forum.

Envious...
In most state parks in Connecticut, open fires are banned. In the local city park (http://www.tarrywile.com) across the street however, fires are permitted so long as the fire itself is less than a meter in diameter.
Even so, I did get yelled at by some foolish dog walker in October, who thought it was her business to make sure my fire was put out immediately. I was doing everything safely, and the fire was no more than 8 inches in diameter. She threatened to call the police - it wouldn't have done her much good legally. I talked to the deputy fire marshal in my town shortly afterwards; he couldn't understand her issues either.

Some folk just can't mind their own business.

That's what it seems like. Haven't run into her since, thank goodness.
