Was rthinking of getting some of the 5.11 shirts after my arms got burned at the weekend...i dont really fancy spending £40 on one though...anyone recommend any cheaper but still good alternatives?

There must be some sort of 'surplus' option isn't there? I have a couple of Craghoppers long sleeved shirts that I wear over a teeshirt which were quite cheap from TK Maxx.

I can see a few polycotton ones around, only issue is they are a sweat trap... i ideally want something breathable so I dont get chilled by my own sweat

Sports direct.com loads of craghoppers and karrimor stuff in their branches at ridiculously low prices.

Ive just got an Arktis hot climate shirt (only available in American Woodland or Belgian DPM) for £12 plus post and packing from the Arktis shop on fleabay

I have a couple of Helikon BDU shirts - an olive one and a coyote tan one. Just under £30 each (£27.99 comes to mind. There or thereabouts).
I love BDU shirts - can't be beaten. Admittedly they have a bit of nostalgia value for me, but I still rate them highly.
Having said that, a BDU shirt is more like a heavy shirt/light jacket than a standard shirt. I did buy a good quality and serviceable checked cotton shirt in Mountain Warehouse for just a tenner the other week, and I also notice that Millets are having a 'mega' (their word) end of season sale at the moment.
As was suggested earlier - have a look in TK Maxx. They often have good stuff in there at good prices.
I'm not a fan of the 5.11 gear myself. Nothing to do with the quality - I'm sure it's exceptional. I just don't like the styling or cut.

I'd agree with that

I did wonder about the 5.11 shirts when you mentioned them. They all seem to be polycotton. I have a Trekmates long sleeve teeshirt which is in the typical polyester base layer material (purchaes dead cheap from M&M Direct). I've never seen the BDU shirts 'in the flesh' but as they form part of the CS95 layering system I presume that they will do a good job at wicking sweat.
