Following on from the Ten Tors challenge thread, I have set up a Doodle poll to determine the dates for the next Dartmoor trip. It will be in September so check out the poll here http://www.doodle.com/9umvkhu5cinqmnv4 and get your name down if you fancy coming along.

As you will have seen, I've closed the other thread and I'm going to close the Doodle poll now. It appears that the date for the next Ten Tors challenge is the weekend of 24th and 25th September.
We will be staying at the Fox Tor Café Bunk House, space permitting so that we can get a good breakfast ready for a 0730 start on the Saturday morning.
The route is yet to be decided but it will one of the 35 mile routes from this year's Ten Tors Challenge, and it will have to include either North Hessary Tor or South Hessary Tor as those are the nearest tors to the start in Princetown.
Anyway, can't wait to get started now. Please keep your questions flowing in, as it's through questions that the plan comes together.

No, we can park at Fox Tor Café. Just need to be considerate and park at the top of the car park. :)

Ok first question, what sort of weight will everyone be carrying on this trip? I have got my pack down to about 6kg without food or water.
Well, there is a Ten Tors Challenge kit list that you will need to satisfy which may increase your pack weight a bit http://events.exeter.ac.uk/tentors/forms/FTT7-2011.htm. The main thing to remember is the emergency stuff like spare clothing, first aid kit and emergency rations, all of which add to your weight. Not to mention the full waterproofs that will be required at this time of year.
I will be pleased with a packweight of around 12Kg including food and 3 litres of water.

Just had a look through list and I have most of it covered in my usual kit so no probs there, I'm going to take about 2ltrs of water there's usually plenty around on the moors although some of its not something I would drink unless really desperate.
I noticed that GPS isn't allowed on that list, does that apply to this trip although unless it gets really foggy it shouldn't be needed although that is a fairly common occurrence on Dartmoor lol.

Don't think I'll be able to make it, any time soon. I've been on a few treks over the last couple months, and after 5-6 miles, my thigh keeps giving me jip, so in the interest of others actually being able to get a decent walk, without me slowing you down, or causing it to be cut short, I will be stepping out until further notice. I shall however keep walking when I can, to try and toughen up the ol' thighs.
Hope you have a great time of it fellas.

I'm truly sorry about this chaps, but I have now damaged one of the ligments in my right knee, through too much running on hard surfaces, and have been told to rest it for six weeks so, even if I could have made this, I now am not able to do this trip.
I really hope it still goes ahead as I love the moor and it would be great to see how you all get on.

Go easy Martin (which you already know) and hope you make a full recovery soon. Things like that, tend to give you grief for a while, especially in cold/damp conditions. Maybe not the best time of year for such an injury, but long as you're kind to it, you'll still be able to enjoy less arduous events and meets.

Yeah, I bought a copy of that picture and it looks remarkably like one my kids drew when they were 4 years old! I am not that worried, has been a while since I seriously navigated my way around anywhere so it will be good to refresh the brain cell. Could I ask Martin, has the digs been arranged for the Friday or does someone need to sort this out. It seems a bit odd you organising when your no longer doing it.

No mate, I haven't organised the bunk house. A call to the Fox Tor Café is all that's needed there. They are really helpful but you'll need to know final numbers and they charge a deposit which is non refundable. I only got caught for one deposit last time.
If you check out the Ten Tors website, you will find all the 35 mile routes used this year which would be a good starting point for route planning. :)

And, if there was ever any doubt, I am now sure that my knee will not allow me to do this trip. The doctor told me to rest it for six weeks, so a week later I thought I'd give it a go running on Perraporth beach. Err, guess the doctor knows more about these things than I do. :(

Have a look at this one for a possible route
http://events.exeter.ac.uk/tentors/2011/map-i.htm
This route will take in South Hessary which Martin highlighted as a start point closest to the bunk house. As you will see on the route plan, the original Ten Tors start point was nowhere near where we will be starting so the route allows us to cross between two Tors, bypassing the original start point, without losing any significant distance from the planned 35 miles. (hope you get what I mean by looking at the route plan!)

However, you really should aim to get to Okehampton Camp on the route or you will be missing a fairly large chunk of the route. Sourton Tor to Hound Tor via Okhampton Camp is a long way and requires some decent navigation. Your call guys but you will be missing quite a bit.

East Mill Tor to Anthony Stile at OK Camp is a walk up the 'ring road' and is well worth while in my opinion. It means that you have actually completed the Ten Tors Challenge as set out on the map. But, like I said, it's your call guys. Wish I could be doing it with you.

Ok, this may work better as I read on another post from the TT site that there is restrictions on access around Sittaford with specific guidance on how to get round a disused farm. Don't know what the restrictions are but this avoids it anyway. Thanks for pointing out the error of my deviation Martin. I was not aware that the start/finish is pretty crucial. Without looking at the TT site properly I assumed the start/finish was probably a car park somewhere, but now think that to stay with the TT ethos the whole walk should be quite rightly completed.

For some reason I haven't been getting email updates for this thread and assumed it had died a death! Well it sounds like I'll health has gripped us all as although I haven't got appendicitis or a muscle damage I do have man flu :-(
I'm popping up to the Brecon beacons next month all being well and more than happy to do this another time. I think with age opportunities to do this sort of thing become less and less because of commitments, I'll health etc etc. I never did believe my dad when I was a kid and he said it was the bast years of my life...
