View Full Version : Whats in your first aid kit?

Without even thinking about it the majority of us will carry a first aid kit due to the fact that we are likely to spend as much time as possible in the middle of nowhere. Our interest in bushcraft means that we use knives, axes, saws, pointy sticks and any other wonderful tools that we may consider useful. From other threads that have been posted I have seen pictures of various first aid kits from basic essentials in tins to different 'off the shelf' kits of differing sizes.
Whats in yours? Personally my kit started life as an off the shelf Lifesystems Mountain First Aid Kit, that is now discontinued as the new version is somewhat larger, but it contained something similar to this http://www.lifesystems.co.uk/psec/first_aid_kits/adventurer_first_aid_kit.htm
Over the years as items have past their best before date this has now evolved to contain:
100mm x 70mm self adhesive dressings
70mm x 50mm self adhesive dressings
assorted elastic plasters as the 'waterproof' ones are crap
antiseptic cream
finger bandage
micropore tape
triangular bandage
50mm x 4.5m crepe bandage
75mm x 4m stretch bandage
safety pins
latex gloves
scissors
pain killers
resuscitation face shield
tweezers
pencil.
Items like emergency blanket, glucose tablets, lip balm are carried with my first aid kit in my Snugpak Response pack. Additional items I am thinking of getting are steri strips and superglue as mentioned by Paul in another thread (good reminder) but I was interested on your choices and any particular reasons for your chosen items.
Regards
Jus.

I have a large and complicated medical bag - it goes with my 'other' job. Along with that goes a large and complicated paperwork/audit trail.
Otherwise in normal life I always carry an isreali wound dressing, a CAT torniquet, Celox haemostatic granules, a selection of airways as well as things like plasters and general first aid items, I always carry a SAM splint too as well as cohesive bandages (vet wrap) oh and a very large plasitc sac (covers burns wonderfully)

Something else I wondered about but not sure about additional weight constantly being added, does anyone carry a burns kit or do you rely on local water sources if the fire bites back?

I carry cuts & bruises basics and pain killers, but most important is compede! I take a tube of pure aloe vera for burns and rashes works a treat!

This is quite handy if you want a simple first aid kit.

As I have burned most parts of my body through my years as a welder, I can thoroughly recommend Lavender essential oil for burns without hesitation. Just make sure you get the real French stuff and not some Chinese synthetic stuff and it is also good for bites and stings. If you can put up with smelling like yourGreat Aunt Maude.......

What worries me is the fact that you keep looking for this stuff and finding it !

Jack's brain can multi task in many dimensions, simultaneously. Not to mention, much of "this stuff" finds him, rather than him finding it...something to do with the laws of physics and dark matter...

My EDC FAK also contains an eye wash liquid ampule which is not something I had previously though of but my recent FAK top-up from Asda contained 3 ampules and I thought that was a useful addition. Another recent addition was a small ampule of super-glue.
I'm thinking of taking Metal Mug's suggestion a little further by also getting a small ampule of whiskey...!

I saw those medi-kits on BCUK (sorry for swearing), at £1 each. Saw the eyewash in them and though "that's a good idea", might have to go get me a couple of those kits (it'll be cheaper than buying eye wash in ampules separately).

Similar items coming up. Like the idea of the eyewash although could the water bottle do the same job? Got the wiskey bit covered as my leaving pressie from work recently was a hip flask :D
