I normally keep my meths in a plastic bottle.
But I don't really trust them.
Does anyone use one of the aluminium Sigg clones (the ones you can get in Mountain Warehouse/Wilkos/etc)? I was wondering how resilient the plastic lid and seal was to meths.
Or can anyone recommend a different, readily available, metal meths container?
Cheers.
I use the original Trangia Fuel Bottles. They are not too expensive and the safety valve makes dosing the meths very easy and safe; http://www.trangia.se/english/2917.trangia_accessories.html

Same here. I think my 500ml bottle was around a tenner and well worth it. The reassurance of having the safety seal on the bottle is worth the money alone. No worries of meths all over my gear.

Hi Humakt
I work with Denatured Ethanol in the lab and use it by the gallon ! All of our alcohol including the Methanol and Isopropyl alcohol is supplied in 5 Litre Plastic (Nylon) containers....
If its ok for us with all the Health and Safety restrictions and regulations I'm sure small 500ml amounts are quite safe in the appropriate nylon Nalgene bottles .
Just check the seals are good , they can sometimes leak if dirt or moisture gets trapped , keep it clean and dry and you shouldn't have a problemo ! ...
Its what I use and have a variety of sizes from small 50ml bottles , just enough for a brew or two , up to 500ml bottles for a week away . I find the smaller squarer bottles easiest to pack.
Hope it helps ...

Another vote here for the trangia bottles, although for just a short trip I have a small (I think it's about 150ml or 200ml) plastic jar / bottle from Cotswold (looks like a mini nalgene bottle but in a more flexible nylony type plastic) as trangia don't do a really little bottle.

Found a link it's this bottle I use for day walks and over nighters. http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.co.uk/index.cfm/product/nalgene-container-250ml/fuseaction/products.detail/code/95110041/group/887/level/3

Try the bottles that Red Bull Shots come in. They are the perfect size for a couple of brews. Take two or three and you have perfectly portioned bottles of meths which won't leak and won't cost you a penny except for the wickedly overpriced contents. However, I've never bought them, just found them lying around the streets/countryside so not only did I do my bit by picking up the litter but I've managed to grab myself some free meths storage. :)

Thanks all.
I did a bit of searching and found several references to meths reacting with aluminium bottles.
I was after a metal bottle because I thought a plastic one stands more chance of being crushed and the lid popping off.
But general consensus seems to be that meths needs to be kept in plastic bottles.
I've used some of those bottles from Cotswolds before, so will get myself one of them - they have quite a beefy screw cap, so are probably about as tough as a placcy bottle gets.
Once again, thanks for your help and advice.

Yeah - what you said Martin! Those little bottles are good for dosage plus it's probably easier to pack 2 or 3 little-uns than 1 big-un. If you lose one, then you've still got the others (eggs/baskets etc.) and if one does leak (it wont though) you've limited the potential for damage owing to the size. My Swedish army trangia came with a flat plastic bottle with a rather dubious-looking seam all round it's edge and yes that did leak the first time I filled it. Hooray for the advances in plastic bottle production technology on recycled containers!
The Trangia plastic bottles will take much more abuse than any aluminum Sigg style bottle.

I tried carrying Meths in a Sigg bottle, plain aluminium with no special internal coating, and it developed a leak. This happened over a couple of years of being in the Unimog. There was no visible sign of a leak and the stopper and seal were in good condition. The cylinder was always carried upright and had a neoprene pad at the base to protect against shock damage.
I seem to remember reading that Meths can attack aluminium but cannot find the reference; hence Trangia use plastic for their fuel bottles and brass for their burners.

I have used the Trangia bottles for years and never had a problem with them, they are really tough and the safety valve makes it easy to pour without spilling.
I got a 300ml version recently and it's a very handy wee bottle.

I have a couple of bottles that they use for holding ink at the tattoo shops. They use alcohol based products for cleaning and come in various sizes.

Just be aware of any additional weight issues when considering glass containers. The Trangia bottles are quite substantial in their construction and, as Jeep has said, do take a fair bit of abuse but due to the plastics used are still quite light. Saying that I have recently broken mine by dropping it on the nozzle. The temperature at the time though was just below freezing which probably made the thinner plastic at that point a little brittle.
Didn't stop it from working though and gave me an excuse to buy another.

These will fit snugly inside army mess tins and will not leave the gaps (wasted space) that round bottles do...
If you bought stainless steel mess tins http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-X-Rectangular-Plastic-Bottle-250ml-White-Screw-Top-/250794673915?pt=UK_Health_Beauty_Natural_Alternati veTherapies&hash=item3a648706fb then you could carry meths + burner and still use on an open fire.
Do Trangia do 200 ,100 ml bottles ?

Theres no need to pay top dollar for practical gear ....to keep pack weight down without buying an expensive water filter just use http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330687104535?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 add to water in your http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290665286713?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 and you have nice safe , clean water without the nasty chemical taste and you can fill up at a stream ,lake or river ....you can lower your pack weight by kgs if you spend more time thinking.

I have been useing a dedicated MSR fuel bottle, for the last couple of years it has just sat on a shelf but after reading this thred I thought I had better check the contents, to my suprise the top was welded tight - took about 10mins to remove after striping the threds, the meths had no colour, the interior of the bottle was black then after pouring the meths into a clear whisky bottle ( co special blend EMPTY son's not mine ) loads of particals and what looked like frog spawn settle'd to the bottom!! after straining the meths through a funel stufed with bog role, I was left with about 300ml of crystlal clear meths which I have just checked in my trangia burner - seams o/k so it's plastic bootles for meths from now on.
I wonder what I could make with a ally fuel bottle mmm let me think. cheers Bri

I use a 200ml plastic bottle that we used to transport concentrated Nitric or Sulphuric acid when we need it on site when I was working in an environmental laboratory. Sorry I wouldn't know where to get them from or even what they are called. But they're brilliant.
