I spent the last 18 months of schooling in south London when the Brixton riots were on. It was quite amusing listening to classmates comparing notes on what electrical items they'd gained, from following looters around the previous night! Bit of an eye-opener for the 15 year-old from sleepy Retford.

Now I'm in even sleepier Lincolnshire and I doubt that the lazy workshy b****ds will make it this far.

One of the excuses given for the rioting is the ancient, worn-out, one of "They have nothing to do". Partly I believe that this is trotted out so that youf leaders and community leaders can get a larger dollop of largesse from us even when they have signally failed to prevent or even to warn of the present troubles.

We know that "nothing to do" is a nonsense when we can always go and make another hobo stove or have a trip into the woods. For me, what appears to be the problem is the rioters incredibly narrow horizons. Limited in imagination and ability to read by poor schooling which is partly their fault for p.ss.ng about in class they are also limited geographically by idiot gang "Gates" and signs. In some ways the riots are literally them breaking out of their self-imposed prisons. Nothing of this justifies any of their actions but it might help to understand it.

Proof is that almost without exception, if you take a group of "inner city" people out into the fresh air and challenge them and get them wet they respond positively.
I can't suggest an answer but there has to be one from our experiences.
