First trip out....

Well, i had been planning a father-son-bonding trip for a while and last week we finally got out.:happy-clapping::happy-clapping:
The plan was to have a few night up and around Derwent/Ladybower/Bleaklow area and put our DD hammocks to the test!
The trip was planned on quite a tight budget but there really are some bargains to be had out there, from the 7oL ruck from Tog24 less than half price to the Hultafors Heavy Duty Carbon Steel Bushcraft Knife & Firsteel Combo at £13 from bushcraft store!
Did some homework with the Dark Peak os, read,read and re-read Map & Compass by Pete Hawkins(thoroughly recommend it) and practised locally with the compass.
With DD hammocks and tarps, paracord, fatwood, noodles and bacon off we set:D
We set up camp in a nice clough near Howden dam and we eagerly strung up the hammocks(a few times:ashamed:!)and tarps.
Fire was next and Jake was keen to shave some fatwood with his new Opinel 6 to get the dinner on:campfire:-baconT^
Anyway, enough of me ramblings, heres some pics from the trip(first of many for me)

Thanks mate, he did enjoy it tremendously up to the point when we were mobbed by midges relentlessly! Also, once the sun went down and the shadows grew longer and darker....the woodlands makes some wierd and wonderful noises at night, especially for a 12yr old!

Ha ha!! Tell him that I take my 13 year old daughter out with me and she's not scared. ;) (actually, that's not quite true but if she thinks I'm getting out of my nice warm sleeping bag just because she heard a werewolf she's got another thing coming!!!)

Me neither mate! Sparked a long dormant flame in me too! It has also helped to cement the old father/son bond, which can't be a bad thing in this day and age; just because his old dad sometimes cuts the grass in his bath robe and rigger boots don't mean he aint no fun anymore!

I have a need to get out.... but being poor in time or poor in cash always seems to get in the way. I have an important date coming up in the next 2 months which i need to prepare for so it limits my 'play time'.

I'll be out and about overlooking Howden Reservoir this sunday having a recce at ground conditions as there is a charity walk up there in aid of our MR team on Oct 1st

Thanks mate, it was a great location but just not far enough off the beaten track(we were spotted by a gamekeeper on a quad early the next morning, not the best alarm clock!but he was ok just concerned that the fires were put out when we left)
Yes hopefully he will treasure the memories and not just remember me for telling him to tidy his room!!

Thanks mate and yes we had a scream! Once he had recovered from a serious bout of X.B.D.S (xbox deficiency syndrome) all I had to do was take his mind off being outside! A quick demo of fatwood, firesteel and food al fresco and we were away!!
