why is it when we have a power cut so many people come round my house and say have you got a spare candle or have you got this and that
even when one of the people has a caravan lol
save power eat raw meat

Maybe you should make a sign that says something like... "Candles food and other supplies can be found at your local shop." :)

Because they know you have a spare candle and this and that for emergencies. If you said "no" often enough they'd stop. But is that what you want? You should be flattered by the fact that they see you as their saviour in the event of a disaster. :D

i so look forwards to power cuts so i can enjoy some back to basics living ,nothing like the hiss of the tilley lamps! sadly we rarely get a power cut here.
