Do you have certain tunes that you enjoy when outdoors, walking or in the woods sometimes? Don't get me wrong most of the time I enjoy the soundtrack of Nature, but occasionally I enjoy some tunes round the campfire.

Also lately I've been enjoying a lot of Tom Dale, a local busker down here in Cornwall who plays lapslide steel guitar, harmonica & more. Thanks to Phil & Matt for introducing me to him.

Songs From The Wood by Jethro Tull surely is the most appropriate of all. I would listen to music in the woods but it would just end up being drowned out by the noise of rotary and fixed wing operations round here.

But what has happened to communal singing? Years ago we would always sing on the trail or by the campfire. Admittedly some of the songs might not be very edifying or even obscene but it was something pleasant anyhow.

OK I am a grumbly wrinkly but have younger people lost touch with their past in a welter of PCness and constant school/media emphasis on every culture but their own?

To hear and join in something like "The Foggy Foggy Dew" under the stars on the Wiltshire Downs was great and so what if we then descended to several verses of "We're off to see the Wild West Show" or "In Mobile"?

The voice weighs nothing.

Another singer here.

Probably not cool enough for the younger ones here, but stuff like Swinging on a star, Whiskey in the jar etc. My kids like Fred Wedlock's English Urban Garden and another pub favourite of mine My brother Sylvest. When they're a bit older I'll introduce them to more of Fred's delightful humour; Threshing machine, Handier Household Help and Robin Hood spring to mind.

I'm with ya on that Al, one of my personel faves is the live version of the gael and also caledonia is an amazing track! What about clan an drumma's cover of the gael to get ya stomping!
A tune I love to listen to while out n about is Steve tilstons' slipjigs and reels and not forgetting green fields of france by the fureys. I think I have got the corries doing Currah of kildare but I like christy moores version personally..sounds like we could go on and on!!

Yes I think it was written by eric bogle who I think also wrote a song about galipoli and recorded by the pogues but can't remember the title, something about waltzing matilda....great song as well and think he is a scotsman but not sure. Been trying to learn green fields on the ol' geetar but find it hard to play and sing at the same time!!
Not sure if you have heard it but have a listen out for primrose hill by loudan wainwright II, think you might like it

hey there,

i am mainly listening to rocky stuff from the late 60´s to now, like hard rock/heavy rock/heavy metal/stoner/doom/psychedelic rock/blues rock and i play bass and enjoy singing in a kind of jam project...

on the other hand i also like folk musik alot, like music from ancient cultures for example from egypt, the celts or the saami.

it may seem, that both these two kinds of music i listen to are controversy. but i think both the modern rock music as well as the traditional folk things are very close to each other. it´s a bit difficult to describe...i thinkt you´ve got to feel it at least. they both try to express the feeling of freedom anyway. many bands in the rock genre have also quite a lot songs refered to nature or that reflect the critic behaviour of mankind towards nature.

when i´m out and want to make music, my hohner harp in A is my first choice ;-)

a more spiritual thing i want to try in the future is chant meditation in a cave, since we have a lot caves here.
