I had old broken shears in my shed so I decided to use the blade off it, it is carbon steel I think and has a black anti-rust coating. It has one bevel and one much smaller bevel, very hard to sharpen.

Is it going rusty? If so it will have carbon in it just depends on what level of carbon.

It had some rust but I sharpened it with my DC4.

Cool buddy of mine made a knife like that from a set of sheep shears looked pretty cool when he was done with it.

Rust isn't a determining factor of carbon, it's iron that causes it. Only way to tell if it's a carbon steel blade (stainless is carbon steel with other elements in it to make it 'stain less' than high carbon steel) is to grind it and see what the spark intensity and pattern is like, high carbon produces the most amount of sparks (is the carbon burning) and low carbon produces fine less intense sparks.

I'm gonna have to come up with a better cord wrap tutorial than I have.

Guess you got it all nailed. The cord wrap is time consuming but this one is helpful. As you mentioned, need attention to detail.

Like Mike says about the rust side of things, higher carbon content normally reduces the rate at which the steel rusts, if any thing. Looking like a mean cutter, nice work. Look forward to seeing the finished article :)
