Just had a wander round my local woods, small mixed deciduous.
very wet and slippy.
The most noticable activity was, Jays. Doing what they do best, this time of year, collecting acorns.
The fact they use several areas to store them, means often some are forgotten and therefore have chance to germinate.
Corvids often get bad press, just thought I'd redress the balance a little.

They should be as revered as, the pigs in Spain that feed on acorns:D

Why do I never seem to see Jays? Hear them often but man they're elusive!

They do look lovely...

I get them occasionaly in the garden. They come in from the neighbouring woodland but never stay long as the jackdaws will not put up with them. Same with the magpies, the jackdaws rule the roost around here. I often hear them rather than see them.

Interesting, I have a similar thing with the Starlings, they also repel certain other bird species, from the garden.

This is probably the best time for seeing them,
Local birds flying between the woodlands and their acorn hidey holes.

Plus the birds from the continent will be arriving and looking for food.

Saw one today on my travels through Dartmoor. Lovely looking bird and a beautiful flash of colour as it took off.

last year I had a couple of nests full of jays behind my workshop somewhere, and they definately make a racket! Only ever saw the odd blue flash betwen the trees though :( I haven't seen a stationary jaw in years.

The Jays on my local patch have flourished over the last few years, there is a gang of about 30 now that aint at all shy. Theve even pushed out the Magpies who used to rule the woods.

Like many Corvids Jays are social birds, however I would think 30 is a unusually high gathering.
I remember, maybe 10 years ago, seeing 14.
your very fortunate.

The woodland on my patch is split into two sections with a gang of about a dozen Jays in each bit. When i first started shooting there it was all magpies and to see/hear a Jay was a rare treat. Now i rarely see a Pica pica at all. Ive got a theory that the Jays got smart and started robbing the Pica nests :confused2:
