Saw one of these on the net and was shocked at the price so i thought id make my own so here it is. Mahogany turned, sanded and given a few coats of linseed oil.

the next one's going to be a tube to either hang round your neck or off a belt with a firesteel inside it, a striker and a few pieces of tinder.

Very nice! The larger ones, are you going to make the bag and blowpipe to attach them to as well? Lol

Cheers Bernie, i'm no expert but i think you may have a little fun turning the stoppers.....i keep turning that lathe off and trying the main body on.....if it's a touch too big i put the tailstock back in and sand it down a bit more and i try to make it with a very slight taper so that the stopper goes in about halfway allowing plenty more to tighten up to as it wears, if that makes any sense, hope it helps.......andy

p.s. the handline fourth from the left is now on its way to germany.

Use thin waxed string to adjust the fit on the stoppers, the same stuff that creates a tight fit and seal in the mentioned bagpipes, is what holds the chanter in and drones together. String is similar to heavy thread but is waxed like leather sewing thread.

or as mike said you could use a little waxed twine ......if you do it may be an idea to put a very small groove in the stopper to prevent the twine from sliding up the taper....i think ill try it next time i make one
