its a very efective method of hunting small game, rabbits ,pheasants (not peasants!)
with some catapults out gunning legaly held air guns and the small size fitting in the bushcraft kit i recon theyre hard to beat!
heres some game ive taken:

I have a slingshot, never hunted with it. I dont think im a very good shot, i'd probably just hurt them.

The slingshot i have is a black widow. I think i'll get practicing.

Thanks :)

practice makes perfect! i recon 200 shots would get you pretty close, more power helps to,the Hunter catapult is nearly 2 x thepower of a black widow or pro diablo.

I have plenty of ammo.

Did you make yours or buy it?

You got some good shots!

Hey Fish, I bought a 'hunter' earlier this year and have had a huge ammount of fun with it, I now need to replace the thereband, is it possible to purchase some of the thereband gold without buying a whole roll?

Regards, Matt.

Fish, Is there an age limit on buying catapults?

Matt

I was thinking of enough to re-sling(not sure of terminology) it maybe 2 or 3 times. I think the thereband only tore because I was carrying the catty in a pocket with some fencing staples and they'd nicked it, doh.

Matt.

Good pics Fish,

I've taken a couple of bunnies & blackbird with'em when I was younger, but nothing in the past few years.

I quite fancy giving it another go, never know might find out how fast Martin can run at the next meet

I've got a home made Catapult, made out of Ash and Surgical tubing. Only ever used it for target pratice though, Sticks Holes in cans at about twenty five feet.

Just been reading about Slings and there use in hunting. I like the idea of them as they can be made pretty much any where with natural materials.
I've just put one together out of some spare paracord. Knited the pouch out of the Cord and some tent line I had lying about :-

http://slinging.org/index.php?page=5-strand-woven-paracord-sling-tutorial---jeffrey

I'm wondering if anybody has any experiance with them?

I'm gonna get some marbles to practice with this week and see how they fare vs a catapult.

Nice thought on that Bambii,i'd be the same, target practise until im good enough for the one shot kill,i wouldnt want to be put in front of a firing squad for execution,,,,BANG "oops sorry got you in the leg",BANG "ooops sorry got you in the shoulder that time"...not nice to kill anything but if your going to kill for eating then as long as its done clean and humanily and not as often as necessary then all good, good luck witht the target practise.

I got the Ergo 2 from Fish a while ago, although I'm not ready to hunt with it yet it don't half pack a punch.

I messed about with steel bearings for a while but I was interested to find they don't have the same kind of devastating energy on impact as the lead balls. Need to get me some more me thinks.

Well Fish, I can see that you must be a master at this? I have not used a catapult since I was a kid. I know that they can be very powerful now, I have also seen a file on you tube i believe about this American guy who is the best shot in the world (maybe)

great words. i feel same way. i teach my kids this way. you can only kill if you'll eat it. animals are not toys and they are not alive just for you to shoot them for your own pleasure. kill and thank that animal for the food it gave you but only if you need to. i am myself made couple a slingshot, bought another couple and do some target practice with my oldest girl. shooting boxes and cans. :)

This thread got my brain ticking last night, so I dug out my Diablo which I aint played with in years, nipped down mole valley and spent £3 on a new sling as mine was perished and spent the afternoon in the woods with my boy trying to improve my aim.
I've never hunted with a catapult, and I'd like to do so as an air rifle is bloomin bulky. A lot of practice is totally necessary tho, as others have mentioned, I'd only hunt if I could guarantee that one shot kill

@ Fish, I'd really like a Hunter, as my diablo is quite bulky and not very pocket friendly and your comments on power have swayed me too. So I checked out your site and I'm very tempted :D
But, Ive got some antler and want to make something with it and I thought maybe a catapult with one of your pre made flatbands could be the go... Your thoughts on this would be appreciated, ie strength and durability of antler for this purpose. :confused2:

Kiltie
30-01-2011, 09:18 PM
Think I'm gonna go down this road also Phil, watched a documentary where an Innu was cutting antler (it was Caribou) with a hacksaw and it took him bloody ages, so this stuff is harder than steel, I dont think that Deer antler would be that much weaker, sounds like it could work !

fish
30-01-2011, 09:42 PM
antler makes for a very fine catty,to atach hunter bands you would need to make a groove all round the top of the fork as in the hunter pics, this helps keep the bands on.

pm me for more details.

RoadKillPhil - I've not shot mine in a bloomin fair while and would like to get back into'em also. Me, you & Matt should hookup to shoot some cans sometime. Fancy it?

@ experienced catapult hunters ;) : I know lead round bullets are mostly used with catapult when killing is intended, but what kind of natural projectile would work best, if you're running out of bullets?

I think round pebbles may be ok... Do they absolutely have to be perfectly round? Have you ever tried to shoot with just any stone found on the ground?

Cheers
Ben.

fish
28-02-2011, 10:30 AM
pebbles of nearly round will work fine, the problem is consistancy is essential for accuracy, each pebble will weigh different.the flatter the stone the more erratic the flight, and if very flat it will resonate with a loud buzz,i think in a survival situation i would try making clay balls ,i have met folk who have used hazel nuts but given the amount of misses expected you could be better off just eating them!

You're making a very good point! :D

Say I shoot twenty meters far from my target. Given the impressive power of the catapult shot, is accuracy really affected on so short a distance?

too true it is! there are just so many posible variables, draw length, tempurature of the bands, length of the bands, size shape and weight of the projectiles, anchor point ,wind and all manner of others, thats why i recomend consistancy in the set up used.

yes mate ,pm me.
