Evernin all :D
Well i've just got in from a lovely wander with my dogs by the local river. While I was out I stopped a while under a patch of beech and got me tools out for a spot of whittlin.
I wanted to test out my new Carvin' Jack and I've caught a coupla vids these past few days on some basic carving skills. Now Ive done a few spoons and some other bits n bobs, but I would like to start doing some more detailed stuff.
Soooo, over the weekend, Corey presented me with an offcut from the logpile up the field where the 'oss be. Not sure what it is, choices are ash, goat willow or sycamore. I shoved that n me Jack in the pocket and slung my Peasant knife round the neck and bimbled off into the setting sun.
without further ado, heres the result so far...

The light was thinning rapidly and I had to give it up for the evenin and get the dogs home. I'm thinking of making it into a spoon handle for Corey as he keeps badgering me to make him a spoon.
Thanks for looking
Phil

Nice one mate, ever thought about carving walking sticks? Good turnover, and you clearly have the knack for it.

I really enjoyed the vids, very easy to follow and great to listen to. I watched part 1 then part 2 yesterday and all his instructions and techniques just stuck in my head...

As for the Carvin' Jack, it comes in both left and right handed versions and I got mine here http://www.axminster.co.uk/flexcut-flexcut-carvin-jack-prod33282/
It was an absolute pleasure to use :D for this project I only used the carving knife, the V scorp and the straight gouge. I reckon I'll use all of the tools on the Jack and although it may seem pricey, if looked after well, it is a tool for life. I reckon it will go everywhere with me and will replace my frosts mora carver and hook knife for everyday whittlin. For bowls and kuksa and camp use, I'll probably use the moras as well as the jack.
I'm also quite pleased with the slipstrop that comes with the tool, a nice touch to keep it in top form.
In conclusion, well chuffed! Cant wait to get whittlin agin! :D
Thanks to all your kind words :D
All the best
Phil

Just to add, some credit needs to go to my Svord Peasant knife too :D To start the project I sliced the round edge of the stick into a right angle for which the Peasant was used. This knife ties for first place (with the Jack) as my favourite woodland tool! My Peasant was a birthday present from my wife and kids and it replaced my 510 (which I really liked too!) as my EDC. A beauty knife that was recommended and tried and tested by many a folk on this forum.
Ansum! :D

Great work as ever Phil. My wood spirits always turn out more like tortured souls :p

All but finished. The wood dried very quickly and started to split down the middle so I cut off the split section and was left with very little to work with. So I've made this micro teaspoon that'll slot nicely in my brewkit. It needs a little more sanding and I'm toying with the idea of adding a subtley small amount of paint, but, as with all such projects, you start with an idea and it evolves and changes as you go.

I'm not overly impressed by the finish.... I know I can paint better than this, but its varnished now!! so no going back. I see this as something to learn by. Anyways, it now lives in my billy as a part of my brewkit. The actual spoon bit is oiled btw.
Thanks for looking

That's fantastic workmanship. I think I'm going to have to have a go at this carving malarkey.
I've carved a few spoons etc like everyone else ( I think it's a bushcraft law to carve atleast one spoon) but I have never done any spirit or art carving.
Although, unless it comes out as good as yours then I won't embarrass myself by putting the pictures in here.
Ade.
i know it's an old post, but what a piece of work, about to walk the dog soon, just might turn up a nice piece or two of wood to play with,
got me some lime,to play with, and a carving jack in my hunting bag,
thanks for the post really inspirational.
