I decided i wanted an opinel that nobody else had. So that it was unique to me, i changed the shape of the blade and handle to how i wanted it..

The blades a bit dirty at the moment, need to clean it up. Some oil from the handle ran down.

Nice one mate I like what you done with the handle, I have a drop-point on my opinel as well I think it makes the knife look a wee bit better.

Thanks Mouldsy!
I do like the drop point on them, one reason i changed the handle shape is because it got burned at the end :D lol

Great to see you customising your kit and making it your own :)
I really like what you've done with it. Is that an Opinel No.8?

Ahh.......
Nice one Edd.
I think if I had a go at doing something like this. I'd fail & make it look stupid.

"He who never made a mistake, never made a discovery." - Just don't try it with my Opinel No.8 Kieran :p

I don't think I will edit it... Maybe change the blade shape slightly... Dunno. Depends what I think when it comes in the post. :p

I've never tried an Opinel before. What do you guys think of their performance? Also, it is my understanding that the ring turns to lock the blade open. Have you guys ever had any trouble with it getting loose? I've been thinking of getting one for my son. Right now he has a small fixed blade in a scandi style that we built together from a kit I picked up from Ragnar's. Thinking of adding a good folder to it. Thanks for any info.

I think the opinels are a cracking knife i have a no10 which suits me but others might prefer the smaller type. They are like the mora's, cheap but you get real value for your money, i have never had any problems with the locking ring. I don't think you could get a better folder for your money.

Really good little blade. I managed to pop the ring off once, i forgot that i t was locked closed and pulled the blade up. I thought it was odd that it wouldnt open then PING the thing went flying, got it back on. No problems since that but admittingly it was my fault.
Easy to sharpen and maintain, i would recommend it.

Mine came in the post today. I have a number 8... If you have bigish hands, i would suggest the 9

Now i don't have small hands, but I find the No 7 sufficient for the tasks its designed for, any job that would require something bigger then I use my Mora.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely looks like I may get one of these for my son's birthday. He has proven to be rather safe with his fixed blade, so I think he should handle a locking folder. Just haven't found one that would be easy for him to unlock(he will be turning seven in Feb.). The Opinel sounds like it would fit him perfectly.

I think the Opinel would be a great knife for him. The only thing is, obviously it doesn't lock automatically; but the lock (when it is locked) it very firm, and you don't need to worry about accidently unlocking it when using it. Like you would with a normal folder.

They are great knives. Brill value. And if you mod them can look pretty good too. Nice work mate.

Opinel do a kids version as well, just as sharp, but with a rounded end as most kids accidents are with the point.

I got one of these for my wee lad and to be honest I wish I had got him a normal one(he now has a mora), the blade seems a bit thinner than the normal Opinels and like all new Opie's it is very stiff to get open when new which can run the risk of a serious cut as kids would be prone to wrap their hand round the blade to try to open it, plus the fact that he is using it under supervision anyway, I like the idea of these and they are good for the fact that they don't have a point and they run slightly less risk of injury but most of my cut's have been from slashes and not stab wounds. I do really like the Opinel's and do highly recommend them as I carry a No10 myself but if you are buying one for your kid and they are using them under supervision I would just go with the normal type.

I got one off ebay last year- a used No 9. It was abit abused-tip was bent. I filed it off and made it a drop point, then I rasped the handle flares some on the back and sides of the handle. Drilled a lanyard hole and epoxied a brass tube in it. Linseed oiled the hande.
It was old so it did not have the ring cut to lock in the closed position- I took two flat screw drivers and popped the ring off, filed a notch to lock in the closed position, tapped it to narrow the ring a bit and make it tighter, also the hinge was a tad loose and the blade would flip out freely, I tapped the pin with hammer on a vise anvil. It was very nice after the mods. I gifted it after someone showed interest in it when I was showing it off.
It was scary sharp. I seemd to cut myself every time I opened it. Clumsy as an ox I guess.
The olny draw back-maybe not to all-the temper seemed a bit soft.
Sorry, not sure how to post pics here.

I have the Opinel number 9. This one is a good useful size. Ring lock works fine, never had a problem yet. Holds an edge pretty well and comfortable to use. I'd recommend one.
