Hey everyone,

Just need some advice on Machetes/Parang's.
I'm looking at purchasing a Machete but I was wondering if anyone has/had one and can give a recommendation on good ones, just want it for general bushcraft use, cutting wood, hacking down branches or trimming twigs for shelters.
Main things its needs -
~ Easy to Sharpen
~ Strong Blade
~ Cheap !
~ Doesn't matter too much if its short bladed or long bladed (10" - 22")
~ Preferable from the UK

Would this be any good for the price ?

Thanks very much,

Will.

Will, i just bought one from "ronnie sunshines" cost £9.99 plus postage, made in brazil( its standard brazilian army issue i think) comes un-sharpened but a few licks with a file sorts that, 20 inches long, nice rivetted handle, you cant go wrong. oh and it turned up in 48 hours.

I normally buy from Greenmanbushcraft, good shop, they sell the Clipper for around a tenner. I'm getting a 5" Condor Rodan, it's better for chopping than my Clipper.

I don't know about the shipping, but Machetespecialist.com is a great place to look at. I have the Condor 14" golok and it came razor sharp, convex edge and F&F was amazing considering some of the machetes I have were just this side of a leaf spring off an old truck !!

A handful of my friends have the Martindales and really like them, they need a little bit of work, but are pretty good tools.

If you wanted to go really nice, I mean really nice, Bark River Knife and Tool-Golok-north of 200 us dollars but everyone I know who owns it says it is completely worth it.

Another option thats pricey is Blind Horse, they also have a great machete, about 180 us dollars.

Good luck !

I use one of these Tramontinas every day in my woodlands. I have now used it for three years and it's still a good 'un. It gets used for coppicing, trimming poles and all sorts of general work. The only thing that I can moan about is the sheath; it didn't last long. The steel is very good though and holds a good working edge very well.
I got mine from Clusons in Petersfield for under a tenner
