Came across this today. First one I have ever seen. There where two on a dead birch, tried to knock it off but had to use a pruning saw to cut about half way through then pulled it off.
About 5x3"
Now what on earth do I do with it. Presuming it actually is Fomes fomentarius.

Although I'm not an expert I think it is the Fomes Fomentarius, look on YouTube for tutorials.

they are tuff things, i believe you can burn them and use them to carry a glowing ember with you, as with cramp balls. ive not tried this to compare them to cramp balls tho. my next fungi experiment i think.
