Seconded !! Water is powerful and relentless, yet predictable.

What kind of water are you looking at taking it in.... ie rivers or lakes ?

Good fun.. Where I grew up, many of the fields used to flood every year and we would make rafts. Good memories..
Try popping around your local garages, or industrial estate, and ask if they have any old barrels they want shot of. Then find some old pallets and start lashing everything together..

Yeeeah! I am not a silly little child :p I have one because I go Kayaking all of the time...
I am unsure.. Probably a lake somewhere. Maybe at a beach in the bay.. But I will take me Kayak out with us because that will be able to pull us out. I was thinking I could use my Kayak too tow the raft.

I also have one......... because occasionally I get to pull people & bodies out of the water.................:p back....;)

I would be tempted to go for the barrels and planks idea however not the most stable of platforms have you tried looking at the instructables web site ?

Why not go down to Falmouth or St Mawes and nick a dinghy?? Then you'll have £50 left over to spend on recreational drugs and you won't have to do any hard work in making something that might not work. :)

Hope this helps

MartinOr better get a yacht - then you'd have a place to party with the recreational drugs afterwards. Don't sail too close to the Somalian coast though. :D

I remember hearing about a couple of American students who made a raft out of duct tape and gatorade bottles. Can't remember what happened though. :)

As a complete aside did you know that 75% of the UK population are effective non swimmers...i find that tragic given we live on an island

Always wanted to make a raft but I've nearly drowned twice.

So I can't swim anymore, and I don't want to make one without being able to swim.

Read the Kon-Tiki expedition by Thor Hayerdahl. They built one from balsa logs that floated from South America to the Marquesas islands in the pacific (thousands of miles). Also recommended reading by him: Fatu Hiva, where he spends a year on a desert island with his new wife. Perfect reading for bushcrafters and raftbuilders!
