He uses the magnet to see what the heated steel reaches critical hardening temp, so with the O-1 steel, it's around 1650C.

File work is done with different shaped files. Normally just a round (chainsaw file) and a triangular (tri-square) file, but there are a few other profiles that are useful. The blade is clamped in a vice (before hardening) and the files used at varying angles to the x-y axis' of the spine. The shallower the angle, the longer the cut out, and the steeper the angle, the deeper the cut out. If that makes sense.

It's wood hardener, to stabilise the spalted beech scales. :)

I get mixed up with the C or F..... still remember 1600 degrees though..... anyways, I don't go by temp anyways, so it's good that I don't. Lol, also shows my early blades were heated up too much, bright orange, and a dull orange is the colour I see these days since I mostly use the magnet (didn't in 2010).

Thermometer? Lol, tempering yes, heat treating........ it'd melt! I looked it up and the range is 1450F-1500F, so you were right. And the magnet is a handy bit of gear for HT'ing, no doubt about it! Makes for much more consistant and repeatable results.

New scales have been stabilised, and are being attached to the blade now. So far, so good. No signs of splits/cracks/fissures/etc.

Should have the knife finished tomorrow, all being well.

Me too, it's taken long enough lol. On the fourth set of scales now, after several failed stabilisations, and at £9 a pop for the hardener, it's starting to get expensive haha. It's now a non profit knife.

Thats real pretty ! Adam I likes that i does , is this one sold ? and are you making a leather sheath for it ? looks just like a larger version of Katies knife , and boy is she chuffed with that !

I have got loads of that spalted beech , drying in Lees garage so when you want some more just shout , i split a big ring in half and it is , much more snakeskin like and seems more stable .

Keep churning em out mate they are brill !!

Sweet workmanship! I have to focus more on the leather work I do, seems, like the half dozen games of golf I've played in my life, the best I've done was in the beginning, then got progressively worse as the games went on. Hit or miss with my sheaths, maybe due to my perfectionist coming out and making me tweak things, only to make them look worse than if I went hands off in the first place.

I know exactly what you mean mate. Some of my sheaths turn out horrible, some turn out ok. I think the quality of leather used plays a massive part. Some leather seems to take stamps and carving a lot easier, some seem to take dye easier, some seems to punch/drill straight, when making holes for stitching.

I actually had to look at that up! Lol

He said he wanted that type of feel on it, and plans to add dozens of layers of linseed oil (as he did with his GB axe), so I finished it differently than I normally do so he could do that (I didn't wax and buff).

Well, finally managed to get some photos of the Woodbee after much annoyance with Sony USB cables!

Here's the money shots ;) :

This knife looks and feels gorgeous. The spalted wood veins make this unique, but you have to be careful with spalted wood as it's prone to crack if you use a baton. Adam makes this knife with a choice of scales and woods, so if you want to treat you Woodbee in a heavy duty manner, go for a non-spalted wood handle. Personally, I'm using this knife and looking after it as it's a real looker!

The knife is quite heavy and feels solid. Centre of gravity is just at the top of the handle and the grip is good. I treated the handle with just one coat of linseed.

It's a big solid knife that's going into a special place in my blades collection and I'd recommend The Woodbee any time.

I know what you mean about the Sony camera cable, I have a Cybershot and ya, the cable and memory card are Sony only, and a pain in the butt, especially if you have to replace one. I mostly use my Blackberry to take and post pics, way easier!
