Bowl and spoons

Working on a bowl today was going to be a kuksa but think this is a bit big so gonna work it into a nice size bowl. Also doing some finish carving on my big dipper spoon and knocked up a small eating spoon still need to sand it though had to get some carving in before the deep freeze this weekend

Hi

Have you tried an Adze for the bowls , spoons and kuksa's ?
I know the forged one's are silly money but an elbow adze is affordable , They are easy to make ( no more difficult that a knife) and it will save you so much time and handache :D

I made a few at the start of the year in various blade widths , they may not be Hans Karlson , but they do work and work well

Are you using the round Gransfors for sharpening your axe, or something different? Looking really good, mate!

Nope don't have one yet just some sandpaper on a piece of a paint stick works well for me for now. Besides the steel they use on those hawks is kinda soft so takes an edge touch up easily lol

I think this is going to be close to the final shaping of it also a couple pics with ruler for sizing she's a touch big thus calling it close to a bowl size lol :D

I saw a comment earlier in this thread about the carving being "Off to the deep freeze", can someone explain please? Is this a carvers tip/trick?

I'm just getting back into carving so I'd gladly be given any tips that would help, the deep freeze has intrigued me.

Indeed I do carve outside :D though not happening today I'm afraid little bit wet and on the cold side LOL

Ok I feel really stupid now! I've just re-read the original comment and he was referring indeed to the cold weather and not some clever carvers trick!!

the one down side to my camera it doesn't pick up the color of the grain well but then again ya have to look for it in beech anyways but got a real pretty light golden color to the grain

Here's an update from todays work. Did some rasp work bit more knife shaping on the front of it more needs to come off still. Also a ton of sanding on it still a ton of it left to gotta do a lot on the inside of the bowl. Not to shabby though considering about a month ago it was still a log LOL

Thats real nice work mate,looks almost white! I had a go at making a ashtray today out of a piece of ash today,been hard work,do you do all your work with the wood while its "green"? piece i've been working on was cut about 2 months ago and is as hard as iron!

It has a very subtle golden color to the wood grain my camera just can't pic it up but yep it is a very smooth creamy white. Yeah most of my work is done green thus why it takes a bit longer to finish it up. Ash I heard is hell to carve seasoned up best to do it green if you can.

Was the ash seasoned to begin with? it does get hard as nails though I have yet to work it but then again the reason why it's so popular for tools.
