Doing up a small cup from spalted maple. Didn't know when I had cut the branch today this was gonna be such a stunning piece of wood my camera doesn't really do it justice but this is the start of it. so far just using my hawk for the bulk oof the shaping my spoon knife and my Opi a bit

Splatted Maple? is that a new genus of tree hitherto unheard of?

It's Norway maple what I got this branch off of the splatting refers to the way the color and almost staining in a way is on the top shot. Almost a pattern in a way in the wood

Lol, I came into this thread because I wanted to see maple splatted on something hard........ funny typo!
If I came into a chunk that sized (I can buy come to think of it), I'd likely make something similar, but the stuff I buy has pretty heavy 'splatting' and needs to be stabilized, therefore while it looks awesome, it's totally unusable for food use.
Enjoy your new kuksa, hopefully future beverages don't end up 'spalting' on your pants. ;)
