I'm a bit rubbish at fungi. This was taken in early October and is about the size of a small boot.
I'd love to think they were edible, since there were loads and they were walking distance from my house.
Any idea?

Can't get an indication of size or see the gills with this photo, but from a general look through my classification tome it resembles a Parasol mushroom (Macrolepiota procera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrolepiota_procera)).
...but, like I said, need more shots to be sure.

I felt bad for posting it without sufficient detail. :(

I'll be honest I don't think it is the Parasol I'm afraid. The cracks in the cap are lateral as opposed to circular and the stipe is far too thick.
There are a couple of fungi that do have the thick stipe and cracked cap as this one does, such as a couple of the Boletes and Clitocybes but as Steve said, without any further photographic details it is very hard to make a positive ID. When photographing or recording fungi it always helps to have a photo of the cap, the stipe (stem), the gills/pores etc.
Also, location/habitat/associated tree's/grassland always help to the positive identification of the species as most fungi form symbiotic relationships with specific tree's.
