Flint And Steel Kit

Another of the pieces to come out of my workshop. A couple of steel strikers, one a standard C shape forged from an old metal lathe cutter, the other i like to call a "lizard tail" striker because it looks as if it has scales. That one was forged from a round bastard file. Pictured with some chert and some charcloth on a leather background, to make it look better!

Very cool, is something I have to make this year. Recently bought a couple forged striker/knife, and got some chert too, enjoy playing with them. :)

Yeah, they are excellent fun! Great way to baffle people at uni too, i was lighting my smokes with them before i quit!

Hehe, I've done the same thing, whack away at the flint, catch an ember on the charcloth, light my smoke. Showed a new guy to bushcrafting interest this the other day when he came by to pick up the knife I made for him.

Also a good way of stopping people from asking if you have a light every 5 seconds!

I tried that, the bloke looked at me as if i was mad and buggered off. I have my litte spot on campus where i go for a smoke, its a nice little spot, and i dont feel like sharing :P

Sounds like a good way to deal with 'irresponsible smokers'......

Them: "Can I get a smoke off you?"
Me: "Sure"
Them: "Thanks! Can I get a light too?"
Me: "Why don't I just smoke it for you as well?!?"

Bought my boy a flint and steel at one of the shows last year, a nice hand forged one by Dave Budd.He can't really use it yet but I have had some luck with it. He loves it as it is his firelighter and the time will come.

As long as he's careful with it, go for it! I'm an expert knife user (heck, I make them razor sharp), and whacking away at a stone that has the ability to be as sharp as broken glass makes me a bit nervous while doing it......

You won't be disappointed, they spark like a firework and even the boy smiles when he gets his to go. Just got to get him doing it with the charcloth and he will be well away

The curvature at the front is close to the arc made by my hand about my elbow, which I'm told helps. What we did do is experiment with hardness. See this blog post (http://blog.artandscienceofsurvival.com/2012/04/harder-but-not-that-hard.html) for further info.
