Aye folks
Just thought I would post a couple of photos of one of the burl bowls that I make .
I get the burls from a downed Wych Elm which is covered in them. The tree came down about 3 years ago in one hooly of a gale here..
Hope ye like them

That's really beautiful Al. How do you hollow out the bowl on something like that? Is it very tough material?

Thanks for looking Lads :)

Martin I just use a Mora 164 hookknife to hollow out the bowls.
I got plenty time on my hands since im Disabled.
Each Bowl takes about a week . I dont use any power tools on them at all. (Dont like the noise) lol
Next thing Im gonna try is a Kuksa .. Never made one before but cut a small burl yesterday and get started tomorrow got to finish a spoon first.
Thanks for looking and the kind comments lads

Wow, that's the same knife I've got for the spoon bowls! I can see why it takes a week now but I did find it very satisfying gradually scraping away at the wood. A few strokes on the strop and my knife is shaving sharp again.

Can't wait to see more of your work. :)

Hi Al, lovely bowl! I just love how the grain in a burl can look like raindrops in oil if the finish is done well, and your finish is beautiful. What do you use for finish?

There's a silver maple with a burl the size of a large pumpkin on the corner of my street. I go and check after every storm to see if it's come down...not yet. And on one of the trails I've hiked many times, there is a beech burl about 3 feet across and about 20 feet up that I've been eyeing for a while.

Thanks for sharing!
