New pouch for my medieval tinder kit

Just made a new pouch for my medieval tinder kit; just a simple hand stitched (w. waxed linen thread) vegetable tanned leather drawstring pouch. Probably the most common pouch of the middle ages.

The firesteel is made by www.ildsmeden.dk

Now I just need to find some tinder fungus or make some charcloth.

Funnily enough, I was thinking about making some pouches like that the other day. I reckon you could get the leather from furniture companies which would be nice and soft and already tanned ready to go.

Simple pouches like these are among the most common leather items found at medieval excavations. It is not hard to imagine that they have been used for a vast array of purposes.

Careful not to get it damp.. Them sparkers rust almost as bad as my land rover..

Simple is always the best. Keep thinking about doing some of these in different sizes but always seem to end up with more dry bags :confused2:

I'll post a pic of mine tomorrow, as I just aquired a leather pouch for mine. Plan to keep the steel in the tinderbox that I will keep in the puch when I get one that is large enough.
That should help to protect it against dampness as well.

Meanwhile I have treated the bag itself with beeswax to waterproof it. Same stuff I use on my leather boots, and my leuku sheath.

My bag is originally a coffee bag. but since I don't drink coffee (I am in real danger of losing my citizenship in Norway for admitting this in public, so my real name must never be mentioned in here. worse I may be barred from being served Cognac for life, as in Norway they never give you any cognac if you don't take the #¤"%Q¤% coffee...).

i do just that mate ,i cut the back pannels out of the numerous leather sofa's i find at the tip,also the big sofa companies that take part exchanges will usually let you have leather off them too as they get skipped anyhow.

Like the pouches Jakob :wink:
I usually give the steel strikers a wee blast of WD40
as well as a rub down with fine wire wool before storing.
