View Full Version : Not a woodland, but a moorland tale

My wife was keen to do a few miles of walking because it's been months since we did our hike to Steeperton and two other Tors. Without an idea of where to go I did the usual Google research, followed by inspecting my Ordnance Survey map (OL 28). I decided the walk that was described was a little short for us so we included a walk over to Petre's Cross on Western White Barrow. I recorded the walk on Endomondo and I've shared the workout, but when I checked it in incognito mode, I see there's no map! I think it's all or nothing with them; either people can see all your tracks, or none. And since some start from my home, I'm not inclined to make them public, so here's a screenshot of the track:

Here are some of the scenes from the walk. Both our kids did very well though our son struggled with some of the hills. We all feel fantastic for having been out and made the most of the day. Here are a few photos from the day:

Guess who's carrying the 4l of extra water and all the other stuff:

Typical view around us - unspoilt by towns or other buildings:

With a few well positioned rocks, a storm kettle can sit on a gas stove and works quite well. This was after frying the bacon for our fresh bread rolls:

Five miles into the walk and we're still smiling. :)

People like to leave their mark don't they ;)

Streams so clear you'd think you could drink directly from them:

Sunny, but a chilly wind blew at us all day (and we all have the rosy cheeks to prove it now) :o

Finally the last hill before we walked back down to the car:

Heading back means farming land again. It stirs our hearts to see England's green and pleasant land:

Lastly, I found a little ring with numbers on it and I'm wondering whether anyone on here can tell me what it's from and what I should do with it:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-H1au9f7Jqgc/T6azyvYBgqI/AAAAAAAABwo/mdk4RLpbIlo/s766/IMAG1330.jpg

There's a "GB" above an "11" and then, reading to the right an "N" and then 20138. It looks like it has an Aluminium shaft inside and the yellow is a transparent plastic outer.

Looks like a great day out Bernie. My best guess for the ring is a racing pigeon but I'm sure others will know better than me.

By the way, there's no reason why you shouldn't drink out of those streams, especially if they're high enough. :)

Bingo!! Here you go, it's a racing pigeon id ring. To answer your question about what you should do, the answer appears to be nothing unless you also have the pigeon.

A great read and some great pics! :D Thanks for sharing Bernie :D

As for the streams up there, I always drink straight from they and I've never had a problem.

Once again, thanks for sharing :)

Cheers

I put my photos on Google+ and then right-click each whilst viewing it and copy the URL; then when I'm adding a photo to the message I just paste the URL and untick the option to copy it because I figure Google will be around for a while. :)
