Spent the weekend at Woodland Valley with Ash, Franko and his brother. Whittlin, learnin fire bow and enjoying the woods.

Haha!!! Feel a bit rude bigging maself up about it. Twas a fantastic achievement to be sure, but I couldn't have done it without your guidance bud :)


However.... I only went and got an ember after about a minute of my First ever go at bowdrill, then subsequently got the fire goin with he too!!!! :D

I've only ever seen one other person get an ember on their first ever go and that was another friend I taught; Matt :) Tis all in the teaching ;) ... nah you made it happen mate, done superb well done! I struggled for hundreds of attempts when I was a teenager trying to learn it out of a book! :( Wish I did it first time! :p

One question I have is why does my wood carving spoon knife thing look different to yours? Mine just goes round and hasn't got a point on the end I will have to put a pic up of it one day :)

A lot of the Mora crook/spoon knives are infact their normal carving knives just bent round so that's why it still has the point, a lot of people don't like the point on the end as there isn't much use for it and some people catch themselves on it so they often grind it off. Some crook knives will come with no point.

As long as you've got a sharp, bent cutting edge you'll be alright ;)

I managed to do an ember on my first bow drill adventure up at the Crannog Centre at Loch Tay under the tutelage of an iron age lady, no less. However, did nearly remove her head once though with a flying drill - I think that was ancient Celt she muttered under her breath!! It's just since then I have only had one success but beginning to realise that if someone hands you a bit of kit and it hasn't been used regularly then it's unlikely to have been trimmed/tidied for the next job - the tip is often glassy which I now realise isn't a good thing. thanks guys for sharing both the atmposphere and as usual the info. >C

Like Ash says, there are several models of spoon knife. The flat ended one like yours is normally called a chisel point crook knife. It can be used for many things, like carving "bands" around a piece of wood, or grooves in the surface, as well as (strangly enough) spoon carving :D

Not had hospital appointment yet but can confirm with recent work that it's dead easy to catch yourself especially with a pointed hook knife. Take shares in elastoplast - I'm supporting their whole world wide organisation at the moment!!

The music is a portion of: Sigur Rós - Heysátan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmE5hZaj8e4) I've bought their album "Takk..."for some of the moody music, some of it's quite nice. You'll probably recognise the "Hoppípolla (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAqJ0R-EkZg)" track as I think the BBC use it quite a lot.

I think you'll probably be hearing some more of their tunes in my personal vids that I post on here.
