Well a trend starts and this forum encourages you to follow other peoples' examples (sort of) and have a go.

This is made of beech from our hedge that had to be trimmed in the Autumn. this, of course, means the wood is seasoned (a bit) but rock hard (well it did shout "go-awnnn; if you think you're hard enough" from the street corner).

I carved it and then fiddled and made it ergonomic to hold (as if a spoon wasn't ergonomic enough already ;-) )

Then soaked it in lots of olive oil slightly heated.

ah well - like with your own children, everyone else thinks they look ugly but you think they're beautiful!!46024601

Thanks guys - much appreciated - do have to say it does feel v. comfortable (if you're right handed!). Have produced one hand carved spoon before (2-3years ago) in ash with a sort of swan neck/head to it but can't find it. So have been encouraged by other recents works to do it again. have to admit I did have to re-learn the pitfalls of the various instruments of mass construction - I have emptied the household box of plasters doing all sorts of silly mistakes and stupid slips. But I have learnt my lesson (after several times doing the same mistake and a severe rapid onset of pernicious anaemia) and am using them safely - that's right I have Martin's poshcrafting servant making them for me instead!! :-)
PS already looking at the next spoon project, Al.
