View Full Version : As long as a piece of string

Let's try another exercise in imagination ...

In a survival situation, we find a 3m of proper paracord, you know the stuff.

What can we do with that then?

(Let's limit it to one idea per post, continue a list of ideas so far and not post another idea until someone has gone after you)

I'll start with ...

Tie something to something else

Pull out some of the fibers from the center and use as a fishing line along with a Hawthorn thorn as a hook.

Use it as the string in a friction fire bow to make fire

crochet a pair of one coloured tartan slippers .... for a mouse ....

( I have a serious one for later - but only one idea a posting)

If you were really stuck and needed to filter water then first thoughts would probably involve a bit of t shirt or other fabric etc.

But how about teasing one end of paracord open and trying to filter water by pouring down the central strands ??

As I said above , it's a bit of a punt ....

Cheers

Paul

P.S. Hope no bushies or others were caught out in West Wales !

Not a bad idea actually.....

Mine, tie it to a piece of cloth and use it as a sling to chuck rocks for fun, and occasional hunting. :)

Also good for replacing boot laces.

That's too obvious!!!! Is like saying "I'd use it as paracord." :D

Oh, a tournequette! Tie it like the basic necktie knot, put one more loop over before you go through and under, then it acts like a plastic zip tie, it locks in place, undo by flipping the outer loop over the knot and take apart. Makes a handy simple "Fire and Forget" garrotte that way, but not much of a survival aid unless talking about snares. ;)

to tie a knot in it, to remind you what your serious use of it was going to be... sorry had one but now forgotten

I lightly saute it, then use it as a filling for an omelette. Not many people know you can eat paracord.

A weather gauge. You know the type, if it's wet its raining, if you cant see it, it's foggy

You could use it to make a ridge line, to hang a coat, or something similar, over and create a small makeshift tarpalike shelter.

Is that for a midget to use or is it to round up your herd of midgets??

Good idea, one could use it to tie around the wrists of Mountainous fans while out in the woods, to keep them from getting lost or taking an embarrassingly bad tactical manouver trying to flank against enemy mosquitos in the distance while wearing a gas mask, full camo gear and a 20lb bow with four arrows..... be thankful though if those mosquitos turn into paper water cups, your life will be in good hands. ;)

You could use it to collect some water (maybe by hanging it on a tree) if it is raining.

You could use the inner strands to make that trap for ground-birds (the one tied to the stick with berries tied on that they ingest & get stuck to the stick)

on a serious note though - could use it to lash together a simple a-frame which can then be thatched for a shelter

At night make a signal for rescue crew to spot you by tieing paracord round the bottom of your torch and swing it round in a circle, there for making an "unnatrual" light pattern and hopefully get spotted.

all the while being aware that white light with regard to heli bourne rescue can cause some PNG's to bloom blinding the pilot not a good thing when in charge of a large yellow mincing machine....a yellow or red cylaume/nightstick is perfect.....light, easy to use, robust and doesnt run on batteries

I didn't know that about pilots night vision but now i do so guess as sapper says, use glow stick etc.

Fair play Dave, your idea is a good one, if you attract a helicopter, you would undoubted hear it way before, you could blind the crew.

Then you could stop your 'swinging' and adopt a different signalling pattern.

NO need to do as I say at all, just a suggestion....Wont matter in the UK post 2015 anyway now the govt has privatised SAR Helis - the Big yellow budgies and red and grey Navy birds are going....

Thanks old guard, just a different signaling idea. Imagen how much it would stand out for group search and rescue in the dark or dawn/dusk. SAPPER why are they getting rid of the yellow etc helis?

Not undoubted at all, usually pick up the landing lights before you hear it....Its got nothing to do with the pattern its the use of white light and the effect it has on NVG's. At an incident scene at night we have to turn off white light as he Heli approaches, but we have the benefit of direct radio comms with the crew.

Didn't say it was a bad idea either...just said beware of blinding the pilot and offered an alternative.

The RAF/RN SAR helis have FLIR and TI on board these days so once they have located you your white light isnt needed, at night they will usually indicate they have seen you by flashing their landing lights on and off.

Dave. RAF/RN assistance in Civillian SAR has been sold off to a private company....http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2013/jan/31/search-rescue-helicopters-privatisation-fears

Lights are great as a signalling device many a lost or injured person has been located through showing lights - had a few finds myself that way....Still reckon that all these fancy electronic devices and the MK1 eyeball are no match for a dogs nose in the dark...but I am a tad biased
