100L Genuine infantry Begen.... Advice help please!!

Hi...

I have been searching for a rucksack of about 100L capacity, with out soending a fortune...

My dad is ex military and told me to have a look at military kit as it is designed to be used well... a few people have also told me this...

I have found a website that specialises in ex miltary equipment, and have found a 100L capacity genuine infantry bergen for £40.00... this is the description.

Current issue Bergen, Multi pocket, DPM camouflage, Adjustable shoulder straps, used grade 1 condition. 100 litre approx. Personal load carrying Equipment BERGEN. NOT A CHEAP IMPORTED COPY THIS IS THE GENUINE ARTICLE. Please Note ALL DPM Webbing Is Faded. This is the perfect back pack for any outdoor expedition

shall i invest as it meets my budget perfect... please give advise.

In my experience military equipment is usually of a fair quality (though I have certainly seen the opposite from time to time), but also often quite heavy. Very often, when the military decides which gear to buy, weight is a lesser concern than price and overall sturdiness. Do you know how much this pack weighs?

Also; make sure that you examine the pack thoroughly when you recieve it. Nowadays the military seldomly discards items, unless they are broken/damaged or the model is taken out of issue.

Having said that; at £ 40 it is hard to do wrong here :)

I would say if you can find an army surplus store near by and go and have a look there and try one on. Theres no point spending loads of cash and then getting a rucksack that isn't comfy on your back.

it doesnt state the weight of the pack, and has no info on whether the pack is damaged... P&P is included in the 40.00 though... it just says its used grade 1... normally if its damage etc it is grade 2 from what i read... i may just take a risk and go for it...

I went to the bunker in Wadebrigde and tried on a few bergens. they were very comfortable, and versatile with the straps

Opps I clicked the wrong button before :( I have a mil bergen and it is a bit of a lump but solid, I can make a day sack to if I strip it down. If you like I can take some pics and post them for you? I will be using mine for my next time out it will be my first time in years, but I will more than likely go for something lighter in the end. If you go to a decent Army surplus they should have some decent ones that you can look at and then pick the best out. Also most of them cost about the price you have said :)

The PLCE bergen also comes in long and short back... need to take this into account.
There are loads out there for sale..(LOADS ON EBAY). often by the ex military selling off their kit.
I have a short back,complete with the rocket pouches...another advantage of this bergen, said pouches can be detached... and as bencasey says, with the correct yoke, zipped together, they make a day sack.
I think it is a well thought out piece of kit at a reasonable price

I expect that you have bought your pack by now.
If you're on a budget then the mil bregan is hard to beat but if you're not then the Berghaus Vulcan is very much better made.
When I had to use a pack for serious work I used a "real" Bergens pack
