A simple question about birch bark, Do you only remove it from a fallen tree or can it be cut in strips length ways from a living tree without causing any harm ?

I only take bark from Trees that have been cut down or blown down by storms.
Ye can take bark from living trees but take something to cover the scar Creosote or something like that.
It stops infection setting in .
But it is way better to get it from dead trees.
Hope thats a help

Depends what the bark is for. I only use it for fire making, so if it's tinder I take it from any tree, preferably young ones and i only take the lose parts of the very outer layer.
Thsi does not do any damage to the tree at all.
If it's for kindling, and I rip off thicker pieces, I.E strip the tree clean to the wood, then it's only from dead ones.

Sorry for not getting back, totally forgot about this thread :ashamed: so thanks for the answers . I have seen a knife handle made with stacked birch bark like leather!! I will have to wait till I have a wonder in the woods
and find a fallen tree. Cheers Bri
