Hello all,
I woke at stupid o'clock this morning, and after a while, around 7a.m. I decided I would go for a walk. We had had some real heavy rain last night, but I figured I could walk out to a headland called the "Ness of Sound" as there is a single track road out towards there and I shouldn't get too wet. Then it came to me that this would be a perfect time to try out my Wild Stoves, wood gas stove that I bought not long ago, and make myself a brew. Living on the Shetland Isles, as I do, there is a lack of trees, well apart from peoples gardens, there are pretty much no trees. But I figured I could be able to find some small bits of driftwood on a nearby beach, hopefully.
I set off from the house, with my stove, a few other bits and pieces, my knife, a Helle Viking, yet to be used in anger, and a solitary pine cone I had found months ago and picked up. I had decided to pop into the local Tesco store on route, and get a bottle of water, as I knew there is no fresh water nearby, and a sandwich or something to eat. Whilst on route there I found a small bit of broken ply wood, a short bit of split bamboo, from holding up a plant, and a champagne bottle cork.
Whilst at Tesco, I had a look around, and discovered that they sold compressed wood pellets for cat litter, I intend to purchase some of that sometime, as I can use them in the stove. Crossing the road to the beach I hoped to find driftwood on, I spied quite a lot of twigs and small pencil thick branches, the remains of someone's garden waste. So I sat for a while with my Helle Viking and cut them up into smaller, stove sized lengths, before continuing out to the headland.
I also have a Trangia burner for my stove, but didn't take it this time, as I still need to pick up some Meths. But I am sure I will try that soon.
I walked, out the road, and noticed the farther out I was, the quieter it was. Eventually I went off road, as it were, and out to a small headland, and set up my stove, and got a brew on.
5013
Shiney new stove, with a pine cone and some twigs in it.
5014
Used some tinder card to light the stove, set up a wind shield as there was a slight breeze.
5015
Water boiling, coffee in cup and sandwich awaits.
5016
Coffee poured, the embers are still burning in the stove, when I went back to the stove later, there was nothing but ash left.
5017
I know "Smoking Kills", it says so on the packet, but I do enjoy a smoke after a coffee, my bad!
Run out of room for pictures, I post the rest in the next bit.
