As a newbie to bushcraft I was wondering what would be considered a good starter general purpose knife. Something fairly cheap would be great and also something legal to carry in the UK.

I f you wan't a lot of knife for a ridicilously little money, go with the Mora knives. I recomend the Mora 711 or a Mora 2000. They are Scandinavian knives.

If you want a more british looking Bushcraft knife, I have heard good things about the Condor Bushcraft knife. Just make sure you get the 2011 model, as the earlier version was not so good. Well, that had the potential to become a good knife, but required a lot of work. Comes in a good sheath too they say.

Step it up and go for an Enzo Trapper. Mine is an Enzo trapper 95. Money to be saved if you put on the scales yourself. The knife blade is a tad to short in my oppinion, but there is also a
longer Trapper 115, I just don't like the steel available for it. But if you don't mind stainless, they are the dogs danglies :-)

Else any kind of shortish knife with a scandinavian or convex grind (Scandi grind is easier to sharpen if you are unexperienced with this aspect of knife ownership). I prefer carbon steel in mine.

As the others have said, you can't go far wrong with a Mora, but if you need something for legal carry I'd recommend a Svord Peasant knife. Finish straight out of the box is a bit rough, but with a bit of work you'll soon have the most useful non-locking knife that (reasonable) money can buy. Also, you might have to file the blade down a bit to make it sub-3 inches, but a less pointy blade shape should make it less intimidating towards sheeple.

You might also look at Condor Tool and Knife knives. They are inexpensive and like Mora knives, but full tang. There are bushcraft knives and even a Nessmuk for less than 30 dollars American.

As said above, you can't go wrong with a Mora.

If memory serve me correctly, there is a Clas Ohlson in Clayton Square and you can pick up a Mora there cheaper than most other places.
