anyone having any luck at the moment, I can't seem to find much.
But I work as rep for of course a money hungry employer whom keep changing my area so I can turn more accounts around. but then my knowledge of my surrounding larder goes down the pan
I have some spatchcocked woodies, that I would love to serve with alittle salt, rosemary, nettle, shroom & wine not sure on red or white. chard and potates would finish it off.
but I just can't find the shroom, and its just wrong to buy them I enjoy feeding the three of us for a pound
I gave up my shotgun licence a few years back, and the pellet gun just seems like a toy against woodies, but you do get that sniper feeling with the 30yrd head shot

The weather has affected shrooms quite a lot this year.
I went to a spot where I have gathered Boletus Edulis for the past 4 years at the same time and there isn't a single one yet.
By my reckoning we are about 2 weeks late in the season judging by which species I have foraged so far.

We found a few Birch Bolete and a handfull of chanterelle yesterday. That was all. The summer has been wet and cold here as well.
But okay, September is usually a safer bet for mushrooms here. But the Blueberry is starting to get ripe, give it another week and we are out there
picking :-)

Everything seems to be running a fortnight behind. The grouse on our local moors fledged late as did other birds too

Went out for a forage at one of my secret fungi hotspots today and found these beauties.

For those of you who aren't into fungi they are Oyster mushrooms
This particular stump has 3-4 blooms per year starting in late May and finishing late August.

Guess what's for tea tonight - answers on a post card please. Lol.

what are they? could be anything from the picture
I found a microscope in a charity shop yesterday for a fiver, not sure if I should go back and buy it to help with identification.
Does anyone else go this far? as it can be a nightmare identifying new things. That first tester piece can always make you a little nervious, keeping the remainder to help out the coroner
only shroom near me at the mo is dryads saddle, and unless you take it really early it tastes like a saddle

I don't think that you need to go that far pal.
I've been studying fungi for the better part of 20 years and the only equipment I've used is a loupe. They are a really good field tool.
You can never underestimate the importance and usefulness of spores prints too.
Books are great too as is the Internet but remember that a book is not an expert. It will only show you one or two pictures. Best to have several books and the Internet to cross reference along with your spore prints.

Hi buddy
Do you dry your penny buns before you use them or do you just eat them fresh?
Personally, I tend to eat about a third of them fresh and dry the rest for later use in Risottos etc

My wife is the mushy expert, I don't really touch the the stuff due to my tummy problems.
But she boils them direct into a soup, that she freezes for storage. Same with the birch bolette
Here is a vid from today. Not so informative as yours, but thats because my knowledge on mushies is very, very limited.

Yeah he is getting huge in no time. Actually we were worried as he did not eat much for a while, and was not packing on the kilos as he should. But that is more or less over know.

what do you use the loupe for? diamond trade?
in the roger philips mushroom book it refers to the spores of the horse mushroom (one I struggled with recently) as ellipsoid 7-8x4.5-5u(this u has a little tail)
what does it mean?
and to AL my car has a small wild food library in it, and wikipedi is a good friend as well as yahoo images. But you need the books to give you some names to search for on the web
when you are scared of kicking the bucket, a spore print is a must
last season I wasn't sure if I had blewits or not, a spore print proved I had a poisonous imposter

The loupe is used to get a good close up view of gill pattern, how they are attached to the stipe (stem) etc. I wouldn't worry too much about spore shape and size to be honest. The spores are so small that you can't really distinguish them without a pretty powerful microscope.
Use black and white paper to determine spore pattern and colour instead, it's much more informative and great to do with the kids.
