Can someone recommend a good poncho that is well put together for use as a shelter as well?
I knew I shouldn't have punted the one I had....doh!

I have an American army one, that I bought (along with the liner) cos it was highly rated. I have never used it as a shelter, but it would work, if a little short. I use the liner a lot, esp this time of year in the hammock.
American poncho is a fair bit lighter than the Brit one, but its tough enough and sheds the rain well..

Hi comanighttrain. There is a nice little review of a Tenth Wonder Poncho here that I am interested in. The vendor is on a bit of a holiday for a little while but it may be worth the wait. I believe they will have other colours available too

I have been looking at the Tenth Wonder hammocks and tarps. The price really doesn't look too bad, just waiting for their site to say they are back from hols.

I've got the old pattern 58 poncho (and the US liner) and have had a go using it overnight in the garden. It covered me and I had a good night kip under it, but I think if you are taller than five foot ten, you might start to have bits of you sticking out.
It isn't a lightweight poncho, compared to others out there, but it isn't that heavy either. It just does not pack down as much as others do (I roll mine up and then zip my long led gaiters around it, then clip them to my pack).
One thing it is, is very waterproof. I took it with me on my recent Dartmoor adventure, with the intention of jumping in my bivy and sleeping under it, but in the end I was enjoying hammocking too much and never bothered. I did use the poncho when wandering about in monsoon like conditions and in conjunction with my gaiters, it kept me dry. Very dry.
You can pick them up online from £10, but for a good quality one you are probably looking around the £20 mark.
I have also heard good things about Tenth Wonder and I have seen one they do that has extra little arm flaps (which could be useful in heavy rain) and I don't think it was that expensive, £15 ish if memory serves.
Good luck.

I need to admit, I got a US poncho liner back in the spring, and loved it so much I got a second one, literally since I got the first, I've slept under it every night and even afternoon naps on the bed. Amazing peice of gear!!!
I got a CADPAT camo rain poncho cheap, is rubber lined on the inside, heavy grommets in the right places, but have yet to use it, even though I rigged up my new US issue wool blanket with grommets, and am now able to tie the liner, wool and poncho together to make a waterproof sleeping bag system type of thing.

Only have a couple basic pics, and haven't used it yet, heavy and very warm!
Here are the kydex grommets I made for the eyelets:

And here's the whole thing tied together:

Thanks for posting that Mike.
Very neat those kydex grommets never seen those before.
Tempted to get one of those liners as a bit more insulation in my Hammock as Autumn approaches.
You guys have got plenty of wilderness to play in over there mate.

No problem, glad you liked it. I wanted to put the 1/4" eyelets in the wool, but knew they would tear out, so I cut 1" square pieces of kydex, drilled a small hole in the center, gave a bit of a round to the corners, put each on my Dremel cutting disk holder, and spun them to round on my belt sander. Then a 1/4" hole drilled, eyelets added. Nice, strong and simple. :)
The liners are amazing, not very thick, just two pieces of ripstop nylon with a very thin layer of polyester insulation, super light weight and regulate body temperature really well, not too hot, or cold, just perfect for me.

I have a US army Poncho and a wet weather liner (Woobie) fantastic poncho large and very waterproof, as for the woobie, I love it (see Canadian mikes post #8 on the liner)
There are a lot of copies out there - make sure it's genuine, my first order was a copy, it works but is too small for the woobie and had no tie points, had to order again
