I've been given a snugpack response pack.
So I'm looking for idea's of what to put in it.
So who has one and what kit do you carry in it.

Cheers Neil.

I have a simillar "no-brand" bag. The content varies as I build it. Mostly I keep my firemaking and cooking kit, water etc in it.

Right now it sits ready packed with the following:

right Side pocket: Firekit with matches, ligher, "ranger bands", petrolum jelly string, petrolum jelly cotton pads, fire steel etc. In same pocket a small bottle of meths.
Front pocket: left empty for foraging for tinder
top cover pocket: Head light + small hand flashlight.
Open side pocket behind right side side pocket - My Enzo trapper kife with fire steel
Left side bottle pocket: Steel bottle of water or Camelbak bottle with juice
Back compartment: Map, compass, sitting pad
main compartment (at the moment): kettle, small one mand cook set with : 1 cooking pot with lid/eating bowl/frying pan, wind screen, trangia meths burner, home made pot stand. And a 1 litre Nalgene bottle of water nested in a olicamp space saver cup. This will get thrown out once the bag I ordered for this arrives in the mail. Each thing: Kettle, cook set and Nalgene bottle is in separate net bags.
Pouch on shoulder strap: Leatherman Supertool 300
My personal FAK I keep on my body. Habbit from the army.

Added to this I can carry a 2x3 meter tarp in a roll slung underneath, and a leuku secured witha carabinier hook under the top lid. Or my Jerven survival bag in the same manner.

Hi Bilko ,

Check out Gary Waidson's Grab bag on his Ravenlore site ...

Cant believe how many useful bits he's got crammed into a snugpack bag often duplicated and triplicated !!!

Multiple redundancy but bet it weighs a ton !!!!

Cheers Whistle

Had a fiddle with mine...looking at ways to improve it - the general idea of poncho over the top and blizzard bag inside works well...

I'm having trouble deciding where it fits in with the rest of my gear... All that stuff can easily go in my backpack... It doesn't seem to fit into any particular role...

The thing for me is that 99% of the time that small pack is all I bring when I am out as it covers all me needs fro a few hours out. If I need a back pack I just stuff that hole pack into it, or attach it over/under, and that lot is packed, and I do not have to worry abouit forgetting to pack some small item like my head light...

Here is mine:

The bag fully loaded
5505

Everything laid out on the shemagh that also goes into the bag
5506

Cook kit,
consisting of: Anodized aluminium pot and lid with carry bag. In it I keep a wash up sponge, some tea, and instant fish soup, salt and pepper, trangia burner and pot stand plus foldable wind screen (the orange thing in the background)

Camp fire coffee kettle
in bag with chain to hang over fire.

2 wood spoons and a plastic LMF Spork

5507

I carry my leuku under the lid of the bag. In addition the Enzo trapper that I use as my bushcraft knife lives in a side pocket when the bag is not in use as shown in picture 1.
Also has my Leatherman ST 300 in a pouch on the carry sling of the bag. Excuse the dirty knives. They need cleaning!
5508

The back or concealed gun pocket that it really is, contains map, compass, space blanket and sitting pad. I do NOT carry a gun unless I hunt, and a shotgun does not fit in the bag ;-)

Now that it gets dark, I carry a cheap 5 LED headlight with extra AAA batteries + my Ultrafire c8 Cree xm-L t6 1 billion lumen flashlight with extra batteries in a leather pouch.

Finally the FAK in the front pocket.
5513

There is also my army house wife, and a diomond shaprening stone somewhere on there....and of course the fS.H.T.F fire kit that goes in the right pocket with the house wife and sharpening stone. The fire kit is in a zip lock bag and can be seen in picture two on the left side.

Now I have to pack it all up....sigh!

Oh, I forgot the 16 oz Camelbak bottle in the mesh pocket. And in addition I cross carry a second bag that only contains a 32 oz nalgene bottle and a an Olicamp stainless steel space saver cup. It got a pocket too that I have not filled with crap yet. And in winter ther ewill be some wool mittens in there too, plus a wool beanie hat....

A final word....my bag" is not really a survival bag....at least it's not made with that in mind. It's a "have fun in the woods bag" with some first aid and find my way home items thrown in.

Also forgot to mention the traditional fire kit, i.e steel striker, flint/quartz and charcloth + birch bark in a leather pouch that goes in a leather belt pouch on my belt when I go out :-)

I just use my as a grab bag for meets and fill it with things that I wouldn't need on an overnight camp but are nice to have on a longer get together, such as carving tools, traditional flint and steel, that sort of thing. Similar to Waylands (Gary Waidson)

That is the Eagle Products camp fire kettle. They do not sell them outside of Norway as far as I know. But if you copy /paste this into Google, you may find a Norwegian online shop willing to ship it overseas.

Eagle Products bålkjele

Mine is the 0,7dl kettle and I paid 200NOK for it....

I have no idea. But I do not care about weight as long as I can carry it in comfort, and I can.

The stuff I have in there is chosen purely for giving me a comfortable few hours out while also provide me with some entertainment, and it weighs so little that it's more the bulk that is creating problems rather than weight.

But that is the thinking behind using that shoulder bag. I tend to fill up any size pack I use. So by keeping the bag small, I also keep the weigth small.

Cheers Rune - wise words indeed. I pretty much fill my 120 litre bergen so I shall definately adopt your bug out bag approach.

Mind you I only use that thing for a few hours long trips. A day at most. I can strap a small tarp underbneath it, and I can strap a Jerven Thermo Extreme bivvi bag to the straps as well, but I seldom or never do. And in addition I carry a 32 oz Nalgene bottle nested in a 16 oz stainless steel cup as well. Allthough it's not really needed as there is plenty of clean water around here.

On overnighters I use my Bergen, and simply strap the whole shoulder bag to it. I only got a 60 liter pack so the internal space is needed for sleeping bag, dry kit and food....

The side pouches on my bergen can be made into a day pack. I'll be seeing what essentials I can fit in for (up to) a day out.

http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.flecktarn.co.uk/photos/dprsp1ux500d.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.flecktarn.co.uk/dprsp1ux.html&usg=__4cF_uXaIh8Y49h1Fao0qK6G9cIo=&h=389&w=500&sz=41&hl=en&start=7&sig2=43iLX2MP9nIIcq52Hmfg3A&zoom=1&tbnid=MhmMh4Aqws79eM:&tbnh=101&tbnw=130&ei=QxPfUK-nK8bQ0QWXyICIBw&um=1&itbs=1

My bergen has sufficicent in it for a comfortable night out (even below zero) plus a complete change of clothes and most of the bulk is the sleeping bag.
