I have an Opinel No8 in my pocket all the time (well most of the time). I find it's cheap to buy, easy to sharpen and holds its edge really well. At the price, you can abuse it as much as you like and not worry that it's going to get broken.

Although I make knives & am going to youtube some of the processes, the knife I use every day is a Victotian 'ABRAM' BROOKSBANK SHEFFIELD folding knife. I suits my lifestyle and has a very crisp spring. I had to re-temper the blade but it is a class knife.

Svord Peasant too, as an EDC. Have turned it into a neck knife this evening using a simple suade sheath and some paracord. I've never worn a knife around my neck before so it's a bit of a trial for me, reason for doing so is the constant wearing of waterproofs this time of year restricting access to my belt.

Opinel No 7 as a neck carry, and a good ole Mora Clipper, coz they work and do the job without forking out a load of cash, do keep it in a DIY Birch Bark sheath now though, looks so much better than the plastic thing it came with and 'grips' the knife really well too.

It came like that. Afaik. all Eräpuu knives comes with a sheath of the traditional "long" Scandinavian design. Personally I very fond of this scabbard design.

Pommel is a little bit loose at the moment but will tap it firm sometime. Unfortunately blade got some rust marks so had to sand it gently. Throws very well too which might explain the loose pommel.

We got a little into Thomahawk Axe throwing, but then Winter came in and it got dark :( so we don't have much time to practice on the targets now'adays.

For everyday stuff I carry a 4.25" balisong. It's nothing special but it has the utility of being pocketable and fun. For my fixed blade knife that I carry in the outdoors, I currently have a Mora Triflex. However -- I'm very unimpressed with it. I have several other carbon-steel edged tools, and none of them corrode with the veracity of the Triflex. It was a gamble getting the gimmicky steel, but I thought i'd give it a go. Needless to say, this forum caught my eye, cause i'm in the market for a better fixed blade knife.

Well, for the woods im kind of addicted to Mora's. My current favourite is the Allround.

For public edc, its my trusty Explorer SAK. If not public then im loving my EKA Swede 8 (with the orange rubber scales) or my old faithful Opinel #8. Im also mildly addicted to Opinels!

usually carry a spyderco legal carry grasshopper for edc, and or a gerber legend on my belt when working our airsoft game sights, in addition when bivi or camp, i carry a k-bar kukri in my pack as it handles all my camp chores from digging holes to replacing an axe, and it cuts well to, easy to maintain with a fallkniven dc4 sharpener that lives permently in my belt kit.

I use an opinel #8 as a pocket knife and a Mora Clipper s/steel. OK, so the clipper is a bit cheap and cheerfull but as a relative newbie, it suits me at the moment and is very robust. Never carried one around my neck but take Matt's point because getting at your belt with wet weather gear on is a pain so I might think about doing the same.

I wouldn't say that I have a favourite knife as such, I have a number of fixed bladed knives that are used for work (Frosts Mora Classic Original, Frosts 840mg, Cold Steel Canadian Belt Knife and a Skookum Bush Tool that was a gift from an old friend). Then I have a choice of folders Leatherman Juice XE6, Leatherman Wave, Victorinox Spartan and Victorinox Forester.

Raikey, that looks strangely like a knife by Duncan (FGYT), something that I am currently playing with.

I'll be fare, I don't really favour knives in particular, I have a reasonably large collection, but the Skookum is finding it's way onto more and more outings and it does get used as a work knife as well. I don't think that I would have made the statement above, but it is a very good knife.

The Frosts Mora classic however for the price, waiting list, weight, general usability and feel can't be far off that statement:rolleye:

I carry a SAK Hunter for EDC.

I have my Moras for neck knives, Still working on something that I will actually keep for my hand made sheath knife.
The Gerber saw is OK but needs replaced, the ferro rod I put an Ipe` wooden handle on and the BSA style hand axe-wonderful steel from about 50 years ago.

I love bold statements. However I was stood next to Mors Kochanski when he was testing several Famous knives at the 'Ratroot Gathering' here in Canada. After testing them all he held up the Skookum Bushtool and said words to the effect of "well it would appear that this knife has outperformed the rest and its a shame Rod (Rod Garcia who makes the knife) did not get that on film" (referring to the test).
I agree with 'Mors' plus 'Rod' is now making a smaller knife for crafting with, that he just sent to my Wife, which is also oustanding.

Have been very happy with my SOG Seal Pup for a long time but frankly it has seen better days and am deciding whether to go with the same again or have a change. I read a tempting review of the new Gerber Bear Grylls knife on www.mysurvivalknives.com but do wonder if I'll be paying for the Grylls endorsement as much as the knife. It would make it kind of difficult to carve and baton. I think you'd be better off buying a normal knife and getting a saw if thats what you wanted.

Back on topic, I have my Mora 840 MG with me almost all the time (not at work of course) but when home or our on walks. I bought it off the recommendation from Justin in one of his reviews*. It's by far the best £10 I've ever spent. I sometimes sit here of an evening just rubbing the diamond stone on it to get the edge razor sharp. I damaged the tip once "drilling" into a metal tin, but I've sharpened that chip away now and all in all I am in love with it. Though I hope to one day make my own knife, I hardly see the point when I can get a superb knife for 2 pints.

* IMO, what Justin doesn't know about knives ain't worth knowing.

I was just washing my Svord Peasant Knife after working on a fox - it's my EDC but I still admire it's simple beauty. They are a cheap price yet good steel, because of the price the finish is often not 100% but there'in lies the beauty - you work on it and customise it yourself a little, it doesn't take much work at all, but then it's truly yours ;)

I sanded the varnish off, sanded the square corners to be rounder, oiled it, sharpened it, love it to bits! Really works well with a neck-sheath that London-Tony made me, I'll post about that sometime.

That wouldn't happen to be William Scagel would it? If so that knife may be worth quite a bit. My current everyday carry is a SAK issue knife. Based off of the original that was issued to Swiss troops. Handy knife for sure. In the bush I carry a Kellam Tracker Scandi style knife. Hard to beat that one. Has handled everything that I have asked of it.

The big blade on top is my precious. It is really different from what you northern Europeans use as bushcraft knives. There are more north american influences (bowie-like) in this knife. It was made by a french craftsman, called PH Monnet. It has a 15-centimeter carbon blade (XC75 or 1075) with a full tang and deer antler handle.

Also own a Mora, but I find it way too small for me. Just a matter of feeling probably. But I want a big blade to chop big logs, split them easily and other things. What's most important to me is the balance of weight : a heavy blade may well replace an axe for some jobs.

My second tool is of course a Leatherman New Wave, which you may have recognized. Strange as it seems, I've owned several Opinels and never liked them... Well I don't like my Leatherman much either (it's heavy, uncomfortable,quite ugly too), but it's so bombproof and useful that I can't get rid of it... I carry it every hour of the day on my belt.

I used to use a Leatherman micra on a daily basis for work - couldnt do my job without it (even though I wasnt really supposed to have it in the factory ;) ) but it did have a good excuse of "its fully metal detectable". Not as much use these days as im not working right now but I also take it camping when I go out as the scissors are very helpful yet its small enough to smuggle into places where people get a bit shirty about you having a knife (like festivals).

As you see in the pic, I had a couple of the Mora 840 mg companions, the replacement for the clipper (just a slightly different grip on the scales and a more rounded sheath from what I can tell), that I use 99% of the time. It's a super tough tool but I like to carry, either my short pattern 93 issue machette, or the multiaxe you see at the bottom of the pic, for the larger chopping jobs if needed. The Moras are a recent addition to my kit, I was never interested in them before I saw a couple reviews, but I'm glad I got them now.

I sanded the varnish off, sanded the square corners to be rounder, oiled it, sharpened it, love it to bits! Really works well with a neck-sheath that London-Tony made me, I'll post about that sometime.

Used my Mora Companion MG yesterday to cut up the doe fawn i shot on saturday into roast sized pieces. Was absolutely perfect! Only had to straighten the fine edge on a steel once after circeling of skin around the legbones. Love that knife! Has been on every hunting trip this year so far and has done its job everytime.

Allthough I had a very embarrassing mishap on that hunting trip saturday. OMG :shocked:
I FORGOT MY KNIFE!!! Luckily a friend was close by who borrowed me his Martiini knife for gutting. If I would have remembered to bring my knife I probably would not have had any luck hunting. The one tool you forget you will most desperately need.

I have a Victorinox Huntsman as my EDC. Quite a versatile knife, and it comes in handy at work - I'm a maintenance man at a local private school. It sits on my belt in an old nylon sheath I spruced up.
When I go out in the forest, I take my Mora Companion MG heavy duty, which I am quite fond of. Absolutely brilliant knife for carving (excels at making feathersticks) and chopping, and because the blade is fairly thick (3.2mm), it handles battening with ease. The only drawback is that the back of the blade isn't squared-off enough to make it effective with a firesteel.

MY EDC Is a Victorinox Cybertool swiss army knife. I've used it to do more work on my caravan than the rest of my toolkit combined. My camping kit has a 20+ year old no brand folding knife in it that has kept its edge wonderfully. I don't have a fixed blade but i'm going to get one in the new year based on the various recommendations i've seen on the forum.

Hi there, I have a custom blade made by Adam, to my own design and spec. He was every helpful through out the process of design etc..... and a very decent chap. There are plenty examples of his work on the forum, check out his website.

my main carry at the moment is the good old mora clipper, but as soon as my custom knife is finished that will be going in my bag.... cheers Ian...

I use the "Ultimate" knife from Gerber, branded by a well-known celebrity survivalist and head scout... Despite it's celebrity endorsement, its actually a very good bit of kit - the blade holds its edge really well and never needs more than a light touch up on an arkansas oil stone and a swift strop on a leather belt. Feels well balanced to use, full tang and the hammer pommel is useful too. I also have a parang, branded by the same person (my missus got me both as presents!) which was initially quite blunt, although some careful filing followed by several grades of oilstone and a leather strop and it's razor sharp now and very pleasing to use.

For finer work I have a mora knife which is a great bit of kit for skinning, whittling, etc. I opted for carbon steel. Fully intend to make my own blades as well as a range of other blacksmith goodies once I get my new forge finished (it's nearly done! just need to finish the air blast and cinder trap).

Storm Shield carabiner knife and saw for EDC, fast to deploy and nearly impossible to loose, the saw aint anywhere near as good as my SAK, but I lost that. The blade is half flat and half serrated making it excelent for rope cutting, which I need to do alot of. It doen't hold an edge particularly well but it's mainly for abusing (I'm happy to dig/cut roots with it) as the Oppinel No 8 I also carry is treated much better. There is also a Spyderco Bug on my keyring, great mini blade that came shaving sharp out of the box. Yeah, I've got the classic outdoorsman sharps obsession.

In the woods and on the farm I have been using a Condor Bushlore clone, blade seems OK but the handle cracked the first time I battoned with it. Ordered a Hultafors Heavy Duty to replace it as it's soooo cheap and the reviews were outstanding, just waiting for it to arrive.

SAK explorer as my edc. And just got my first mora. Carbon steel companion mg. Don't mind the plastic rubberised handle in fact prefer it to wooden handles I've had. Also think the plastic sheath is very practical. Would like to make my own knife in future. Will probably pick up a cheap hultafors knife and re handle it for my first project.

I will be using the Hultafors knives as well soon.

I have the one of the Hultafors knives, the plumbers one, tell you what the file on the side comes in handy. I got that one a while ago with some snickers work trousers. You will like them, but the grip isn't as nice as on a Mora. One problem might be, you may have to seal the tang with epoxy. Some have been known to suck moisture up under the handle and the tang rots, easy fix tbh.

Snickers Work Wear were bought out by Hultafors. Hultafors are trying to get into new markets. I know this as I have a trade account with them, hence me swapping out my Q511's for something a little more comfortable when I get a chance.

I like it, a bit butch for the plumbing side of things, Stanley have all my box opening needs covered lol. I thought that was the case that snickers was bought out, I thought it was funny that the leg button is spot on to take the Hultafors sheath clip.

I've switched to Hultafors knives now, I can get three for a tenner. orange handle knife just about the perfect budget blade! prefer the handle to Mora handles, no cramp carving, though your mileage may vary ::p

I've always always been a mora man, but with nearly all my favourite models now discontinued and with the blade thicknesses reduced I'm slowly moving towards the hultafors hvk.. Luckily I bought quite a few Moras before they were discontinued, so I'm ok for a few years yet.. But if anybody now wants a budget bushcraft knife I'd point them towards the HVK..

I have an original Alan Wood Woodlore knife that I purchased in 1998 when they were much, much cheaper. It has served me well, but to be honest nowadays I use a Mora Clipper just about 100% of the time. It's strange to think but I do prefer this £10 knife to one that would now cost £500 and I'd have to wait 10+ years to buy!

The length of the handle is no problem for me. Itæs the flat design of of it that is killing this knife for me. It's simply uncomfortable to whittle with.
So I end up using the Mora for everything more advanced than making a barbecue spit or slicing open a pack of hot dogs.
But it's not desgned for whitling. It is a hunting knife, and designed to carve up a deer...with a lot of quite different holding grips.

So I am actually on the lookout for a new knife, unless I can find someone that can make a better scales for me. I do not have the tools, nor the skills to do a proper job.

An alternative in a slightly lower price range currently a Casström No.10 Swedish Forest Knife is a likely candidate based on price.
But it looks a little too short in the blade for me (also a beef I have with the Enzo.

Also the #10 is too thick bladed for whitling 4mm ins such a small knife is a lot. So I might go for Helle instead.

I feel like I should be sat in some shameful circle like Alcoholics Anonymous when I say "My name's Phil and I own a Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife!"

To be honest, I'm not ashamed of it either. Its easy to knock it because of the endorsement, but in its own right it's a good knife. Yeah, I'm not keen on the serrations but they're getting smaller with each sharpen (and may go altogether when I get this belt grinder built!) but the blade sharpens well and holds a shaving edge for ages. It feels solid in the hand and mines taken loads of abuse from battoning logs and being used on a boat in salt and fresh water and daily around the farm I work on and still comes back for more. Have to admit I wouldn't pay the UK asking price for it as I got mine considerably cheaper and I'm not for a minute suggesting its the best knife ever as it isn't, but it certainly isn't the worst and for what I paid (about £40) I'm far from disappointed.

In an attempt to restore my credentials, I also have two mora clippers, a mora crook knife, a svord peasant mini, an opinel No. 5 and a few others...!

Did I mention I have the Bear Grylls Parang Machete too? I'll go to me hotel room now!! T^

The Camo Forester.

It's a Dorset Woodland blade (3.5mm Woodlor(ish) in 01) with Micarta scales. It's currently on its way to be exhibited at the Shooting show and is the first made with that handle material. Will be coming with a certificate as it is first one of a very limited run.

SO ill add mine. I carry a Boker electricians knife my great grandpa gave me from 1941, carbon steel blade. And i normally carry my kellam wolverine. Also i actually lost my multitool which was a Leatherman Super tool 300, but i lost it while taking a deer carcass to the woods on a ATV. I just bought a leatherman surge on thursday so i should be getting it soon.
