Morning,

Just made my first ever length of charcord.... It is going to be added to my tinder box later, along with a piece of flint, and a bag of shavings...

I just need to find a piece of tool steel now to make a striker, to go along with my firesteel..

Does anyone know how to get hold of the steel needed for the fliint?.

Thanks in advance,

Si.

Flint is a mineral mate not a steel(did i read that right?)Or do you mean the correct type of steel to use along with the flint? Paul

Yes Paul, that is what I meant, which steel to use with the flint.... Sorry for the wording.. LOL

Use an old file. They are high in carbon.

None taken Paul.... :)

I have read it back, and I haven't made myself clear... Brain doesn't function properly at times.... LOL

Found an old file in the shed, it looks like Blackpool illuminations when I put them together... Then on the way home from picking up the rugrat from pre-school, found another file on the street !! Double bonus !!

If you want a really good flint striker, I highly recommend Darrel's work.. http://www.primalconnection.com/FlintandSteelStrikersCustom.html

Hi there,

Am new to the forum, but thought that I would post this great tutorial here. It teaches you several different strikers that you can use with flint... very informative!

Hi Andy,

Sorry for not replying sooner, Skipping through and missed it.. D'OH !!

I got an old pellet tin, punched a small hole in the lid, took a 2ft length of rope washing line,(Removing the nylon in the middle!!), Coiled it up into the bottom of the tin, closed the lid up, and sat the tin on my little gas stove on a low burn.

It soon started smoking, and I waited until there was no more smoke left to leave the inside, switched the burner off, and left it to cool.... That is pretty much it..

And I live in Rotherham, But originate from north sheffield. :)

Many thanks David, and I return the gratitude... I am one happy chappy with the striker, the ziplok bags, but the special bit was the H4H band... :)
